Hell gang-I know you are my best bet so here goes, A good friend of mine posed the question( if i had an accident and i wrote the car off how would i go on saving the reg no ) now we all hope that this will never happen but could he save the reg -as we all know that some registrations can cost a bob or two, Ive never thought about this, so has anyone had experience of this happening ,and if so how did you go about it.Regards Bill.

To transfer the reg you need to check the formal procedure - normally the DVLA Local Office want to see the tax, MOT, logbook and the car.
Having never transferred a reg number I'm not 100% sure about needing the car but I have heard of people using a similar car with the wrong colour
(obviously bending any legal rules is not advised.....)

My understanding is this ; Providing the doner car has an mot or has had one within the last 6 months the plate can be transferred, not all authorities will accept cars that are trailered to the inspection, ( if required) so maybe a problem there, also if the car is written off and you have been paid by an insurance company, the car belongs to them, so probably the plate as well. I seem to remember an option of insuring/covering the plate in such a circumstance, would be interesting to learn more.

I enquired when insuring my car as I wasn't sure what would happen to the plate, but I was told by my insurance company that in the event of an accident or the car being stolen I would still own the plate. I'm not sure exactly how it works though!

A friend of mine, who aborted selling the plate on an old landrover when it was stolen, found out 20 years later that he still 'owned' the number, and was able to sell it.
