1956 1000's

I was just wondering if it is possible to find out how many 1956 Morris Minor 1000's are still around? I have looked on the website 'howmanyleft', but feel it has little accuracy as it has Morris 1000's registered as being manafactured throughout the early 1950's!

Maybe includes all Morris Minors, including showing one of the 1930's early model! Total numbers seem a bit light to me.

Agreed probably more than that left, but bear in mind that the 1000 came in early October 56 so only 3 months of production for 1956. Add to that there was still the big export push on at the time might make it nearly correct.

I was talking to a man who had owned his 55 saloon from new, when he put his name down for a new car the minor had only just started production!

I have just looked on the website and found this statement so it does prove that they are not 100% reliable. So like a lot of things I guess there is no way of knowing how many are actually still around.
"How accurate is the data?
As with all large government databases, there are errors in this dataset (especially since quite a lot of the data for older vehicles is based on paper records that were originally maintained by local authorities).

The most common error that crops up is vehicles that don't have exactly the correct model variant recorded on their V5 registration document. For example, a special edition Peugeot 205 Gentry might only have Peugeot 205 recorded on its V5. This can lead to some model variants appearing to be rarer than they actually are.

The key to understanding whether or not the data is accurate for your particular model is to check the model name on its V5 registration document. If it's not what you expect it to be, then it's likely that the DVLA statistics for that model aren't very accurate!

This happens more often with older vehicles, especially for those that would have originally been registered in the 1970s and earlier.

What does 'date for first registration' mean?
Date of first registration is the date that a vehicle first became known to the DVLA. This is usually the same as the year the car was built.

Imports will be counted under the year they were brought into the UK, and some restored classic vehicles will be counted under the year they were brought back on the road."

Skilleter probably gives the most accurate breakdown of production figures for all Minor models in his book on the history of Morris Minors

Yet I have been told that the
Paul Skilleter book 'Morris Minor' quotes the production figures for the various models over the years, but curiously, misses out the years 1955-1958
and besides this would tell me how many were produced, not how many are still around.

If it helps, the figures held on the DVLA database in 2010 for 1956 Minors (either taxed or on SORN), were as follows:

683 saloons
59 convertibles
39 travellers
10 pickups
6 vans

I don't think that there is any way of knowing how many 1956 Minors are still surviving worldwide.

Assuming the date of manufacture from the date of first registration is a bit of a red herring as cars registered (on the road) on the 1st of Jan would have had to be manufactured at some time in the previous year but would still be classed as of the year of first registration. For example my Minor WDF714 was first registered on the 1st Jan 1958 but was manufactured some time in 1957.

DVLA class first registration as "the date" so a '57 build would be classed as a '58 if it was registered in Jan 1958. As many cars were off the road when DVLA computerised their system some have a first registration date of 1970+++ or whenever they were taxed again. Very confusing to a newbie and certainly not helpful when trying to trace your car's history!

The DVLA figures I have quoted are based on year of manufacture rather than year of registration but agree that there may be some anomalies within the DVLA records.

So I can confirm two 1956 1000 4 doors, so just leaves the other 14 to confirm if the 'how many left' is correct.

You can add mine to your list – it's a 4 door 1000 first registered 23 October 1956. Date of manufacture unknown, but going on the chassis number it's within the first 1000 cars off the production line and in any case would have been manufactured in the first three weeks of October 1956. I'd be interested to know the typical daily production figures around this time.

My car has identical trim to the black one in the link you posted above (which was first registered on 1 November 1956), however my car's original colour is almost certainly Dark Green (GN12). All part of the Morris riddle when you have no idea of your car's history before 2005...

Its our little Felix's (NFO 727) birthday this coming Friday , having been first registered on 17/1/57 so I would assume he was manufactured in 1956 unless distribution off the production line was pretty quick in those days.
2 door , black , red interior , van wheels but with a later 1098 engine.

Oh , and half the floor missing since I cut it out last weekend - before it fell out !. :oops:

i had a 57 four door too unfortunately long gone now first registered 934 DRB changed to BAL 745 B (sister sold the number) grandad bought new stayed in family all its life until i killed it :cry:

I recently rescued an October '56 2 door from its resting place of 20+ years. Lot's of late Series II parts - eg rear lights, radiator, speedo amongst others. It was a smashing car which we had up and running after only 20 minutes and then backed it out of its garage under its own steam.
Now sold onto a fellow Dorset branch member who seems to be well pleased with it.
