Speedometer

Post by Tezm8 »

My speedometer is not working properly it does move but it doesn't show the correct speed and some times gets stuck as it is now showing just wondered it any one knows why it isn't working and if they know how to fix it I thought it might be that it needs oil but want to get more advice before I tackle it as I don't have any experience in doing this thank you.[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

It needs opening up and CLEANING - be very careful with it - and be v sparing with the oil......as you would with a clock.

Search Google for a free online workshop manual,,,, But basically - open the glove boxes and you will find two holes - through which you loosen the speedo clamp screws and then slide it out - disconnecting the cable and the bulbs/electricals as you go. Make sure you know which bulb goes where......

You don't NEED to take the glovebox liners out (as in the excellent pics above) - you will be able to get a driver on them through the holes provided.

If the speedometer has been out before, it's possible someone has harmed the little brass bushing in the middle of the magnet wheel. If the bushing has been pushed back (that is to say, toward the front of the car when the speedo is mounted), then the needle cup can slide such that it binds on the magnet wheel surface.

Ask me how I know...

Hello. The tourer I have just bought came complete without a speedo cable so I have nothing to show me the route it takes. I have pulled the speedo forward and out ready to put the new cable on which is ok, but I don't know the route it takes down to the gearbox?

Just the most gentle/easy curves you can arrange. I suggest you test the speedo with a reverse running electric drill to make sure it works. If it's seized it will ruin the new cable.......

Thank you for your help. Does it first pass through the bulkhead though? Or down through the floor without entering the engine bay area. I just can't see an obvious passage.

Chris.

Through the bulkhead and down/round to the gearbox.

On further investigation the old cable is still there, so I have the route now.

Thank you again.
