So now I've got it in the garage it's time to lift the o/s sill cover a job I've been dreading I new something was wrong because the sill finisher was sticking out at the front. The previous owner (mot inspector) had been in there [frame][/frame]
So I cut back the tin worm & discovered I needed more panels[frame][/frame] I cut out the lower section of the panel between door & rear arch[frame][/frame] I. Found someone had gone to the trouble of bolting a plate under the seat
Sometimes I can get pics on here & sometimes I can't Anyway I've offered up the boxing panel & the front lower inner sill to see how I'm doing[frame][/frame]
Questions: is this looking ok & what determines where the boxing panel fits? I guess it'll be level along the top but could move forward or aft. Where should it sit in relation to the jacking point?[frame][/frame][frame][/frame]
For mine I made referance marks from the old panels before cutting it away, In your case I would think getting the front right to the inner wheelarch would be the best option, there is quite an overlap to the rear panel anyway so it is not to critical.
The fit doesnt look to bad I would have it level with the top and you can adjust the bottom edge with a few taps if you need to. Have you tried the kick plate on with it all clamped up to see how well it sits? I would consider removing the jacking point from the end of the crossmember, they shouldnt be used as they are a really unsafe way yo jack up the car and just really a rust trap.
Keep up the good work, it already looks better with the rusty bits removed
Thanks guys, I still need to cut out the rear inner sill. So you'd recommend me putting the front lower part of the wheelarch together to enable me setting up the sill parts? Thanks
The key things are you dont allow the door apperture to distort and end up with the outer sill at the right height. I would be inclined to tack the boxing plate in while you still have some points of referance then do same with the bottom of the sill and any inner sill repairs you can then clamp the surrounding panels on check all the alignment and finish the welding
Managed to get out in the garage for a little while today, my son got me some welding clamps for Xmas so that was a good excuse. Should I drill some holes in the return on the bottom of the boxing panel ready to spot weld to the undersill?[frame][/frame]
You need to weld the joint somehow, either drill holes and plug weld to replicate the original spot welds or seam weld along the outer edge. I did both on mine!
Ok thanks, gonna try to get back out there this weekend, I hope to drill the bottom/rebuild the front area (sill/inner wing). Then I'll replace the front lower sill, not sure whether to cut out for the whole of the rear lower sill or just what's necessary
