Starter Motor Dog

Post by wanderinstar »

Does anyone know the no. of teeth on starter motor dog on 1098. My reason for asking is ,obviously, starter motor packed up.

Have 3 slightly duff motors so I thought I would try to make good one out off three. Here the query arises 2 have 9 teeth and 1 has 10.

Any ideas anyone?

I also have 9 on my spare, it might be worth giving somewhere like East Sussex workshop a call as maybe they might be different depending on engine type.

It would seem then that a Minor starter has 9 teeth and the Mini starter has 10. Oops the starter that I cobbled up from 3 used ones has 10 teeth, and I,ve fitted it. Have to get to work tomorrow. Will it be very detrimental in the short term until I can get it changed.

I'd guess you risk chipping some teeth, but f you use the starting handle it won't be detrimental at all.

It seems that new starters now come with 10 teeth as oposed to 9. This has been confirmed to me by ESM and Minor Centre [Brum]

erm :o 9 and 10 teeth starters being interchangeable?? surely that defies the laws of physics, or one of them doesn't mesh properly...

Thats what I thought but they reckon the pitch is altered slightly to compensate.

exactly - it can't mesh properly with a different pitch :-?

Agree with your point Ray I assume they are using the mini dog as its more readily available ?, and relying on the mesh being good enough however with 4 degree difference in the centre position of each of the teeth there has to be some points of extra wear
9 teeth = 40,80,120,160,200,240,280,320,360, centres
10 teeth= 36,72,108,144,180,216,252,288,324,360, centres
This morning I rang Charles Ware and they checked their stock and found it had also gone to 10 teeth but did not know when and had not had any waranty issues with starters and concluded that maybe they had gone over to using mini dogs instead, so thats rather interesting that a supplier as big as Wares had not been made aware of the change.

Possibly a slightly larger diameter to accomodate 10 teeth at the correct pitch?

that is what should happen, allowing to keep the correct tooth modulus, but as the starter is central in the hole the gear will have to be the same diameter.

Thats a bit unfair as most of the changes in spec to parts are only noticed when someone has a problem as I dont think the re-manufacturers bother to tell anyone when they change their spec, look at the recent problem with rotor arms, and the Silicon Brake fluid example as quoted in the latest Minor Matters.
