Hmm - the 'new ign switch' fooled me - I assumed it was ok until this was fitted. One last try - take the large brown wire Lucar off the solenoid - and check again. If the starter still runs - then indeed it must be a 'stuck' solenoid - which is most unusal. When I say 'it's NEVER the solenoid (or coil)' - of course, just sometimes it IS the solenoid (or coil) It's just not the first thing to blame !

Hi, I took the brown wire off the solenoid and all was quiet...i then replaced it and still all was quiet. So either the solenoid was stuck on and now is not or something else happened?

The new solenoid arrived this morning, so before I fit it I will double check the new ignition switch now that the solenoid appears not to be active.

Does this sound sensible?

Sincere thanks for all your help with this everyone, this is my first project but I would love to get the engine going before tackling the other bits.

Sounds entirely sensible - glad it's not the solenoid! :) So now when you connect up everything - does it crank on the Ign switch??

Yes it does! Result! Thank you. This weekend I can put all the bits back together and fit clean connections instead of dangly bits of wire and then continue.... :D

I'm not clear what you have done exactly - unless somehow the spade contact was perhaps bridging across the solenoid. But as long as it's working now - that's what matters. Well done ! :D
