Morris Minor Traveller 1972 Restoration.

Post by Morris Mike »

Now that the Almond Green Traveller 1961 (detailed elsewhere on the forum) has been completed earlier in the week I was itching to get onto something else.

I have had this March 1972 registered Traveller sitting in the wings.
We visited a farmer friend one evening last June and ended up bringing this away with us.!!

Whilst we were looking around his many barns at his collection of bygones, tractors, motorcycles and cars etc , I spied this car sitting next to a series 1 Landrover.
He had purchased it at an auction a few years previous on a whim for his wife to drive around the local area in.
She much preferred a more modern vehicle so it just sat in one of the barns unused, although it was Mot`d.

The car caught my eye straight away, she was an ideal candidate for a good refurbish by the right owner.

She looked like restoration work had been carried out in the past to the most important areas.

It had been been re-timbered a few years ago, along with associated parts being replaced..
Whilst this work was being carried out metalwork was replaced or repaired
New front and rear wings fitted.
Inner wings front and rear either replaced or correctly repaired.
New rear valance.
Rear spring hangers (front and rear perfect).
Engine sounded very good and ran well.
MG Midget rear diff.
Doors were good.
Very original interior.
No corrosion to the underside ,but a couple of bad repairs had been carried out to the front floor..

Someone at the local garage had carried out some far from correct welding on the front floors ,sill area and front cross member for the las two Mot`s. The metalwork was patch welded over the top of the rusty metal,it needed removing and new metal let in correctly.
The owner had no idea that patch repairs had been carried out until I showed him the far from satisfactory work, obviously the garage were not into classic cars or knew where to get parts etc.

Whilst me wife was having a tour of the animals around the farm with his wife I sneaked off and took the car out for a test drive.

A deal was struck over a cup of coffee before we left and I picked the car up the next day.

She has been sitting undercover since June, but Friday morning I thought I would get her into the workshop to give her a once over.

I went through the car assessing the work it needed.

Welding repairs correctly carried out to original spec.
A full new braking system will be fitted as matter of course.
New front seats.
New floor covering front and rear.
Full respray,Trafalgar Blue at the moment but may go Teal Blue..
New chrome.
Wheels shotblasted and re-finished.
Timberwork stripped back and finished in Danish oil.
Engine gearbox and suspension are in very good order,so no work there.
Everything cleaned and checked for working order.

After a mug of coffee the work started in earnest at 11.00 am Friday morning.
Saturday and Sunday has seen much progress.

Front doors, carpeting, seats etc were removed to access the floor areas ready to carry out the correct repairs.

The patch repaired metal work has been cut out,new metal work fabricated and welded in position.
Some very good condition front seats have been found.
A good secondhand front grill section has turned up (old one had a dent in it) looked like a parking bump.
The front brakes have been stripped and new components fitted.

Front original metal visor removed. This may get used on my van,but not sure yet.
It also came with a set of brand new Minilights and tyres, these were taken off a few weeks ago and fitted to the Almond Green Traveller.

I was checking the chassis number and noticed on the logbook that the Traveller was manufactured in 1969.

It was used or registered overseas and registered over here in the UK in 1972.

Was it perhaps a military vehicle.?

How can I find out.?

A lot of work has been carried out on the floors, sills, front crossmember and front splash panels in the foot wells.
The last owner entrusted a local garage to get the car through its last four Mot`s,they just patch welded the car instead of letting in new metal correctly.

I had to cut all this out and make a neat and decent job of things. A lot of this work goes unnoticed but now it is finished I can get on with work that people will see when pooping round for a progress report.

The area from the B post to the rear is in excellent condition,I think a lot of new panels were fitted when the car was stripped to have the new timber fitted.

The whole car has been sanded back. The doors were removed, stripped of fittings and every bit of paint removed from the inside edges and door bottoms.
The doors are in excellent shape, most need some sort of repairs.
I have rehung them to check body alignment before removing them for priming and painting.

The newspaper on the glass was to stop it getting welding or grinding sparks on and damaging the glass.

I have started to sand back the timberwork to a bare finish.
The timber was replaced a few years ago so should look new again after a lot of hard work.

The first job on the car after the welding and stripping her down was to prepare the timberwork.

You do not want to start sanding the timber down after you have put nice new paint on the body panels. So I like to strip the old varnish or whatever is on the timber back to virgin bare timber, just like it looks when fitting new timberwork.
I then give the timber a coat of light oak wood dye to seal it.

After spraying the car and the masking tape has been removed I then carefully sand back the timber between coats of Danish Oil,to give it that lovely finish to complement the new paintwork.

Stripping, filling, sanding, filling sanding...you have seen this millions of times before on forum post`s so I will not bore you with a blow by blow breakdown of what I did.

The body panels are now in primer...lots of pieces.

Final preparation, some 2 pack stopper here and there filling minor blemishes and then ready for the top coat colour.

The car was original Trafalgar Blue, but having painted the van Teal Blue (its original colour) we have decided to go with that colour on this car.

The Teal Blue will still go well with the light blue interior so no work in that department.

We decided to repaint her in Teal Blue a more warmer colour than the original Trafalgar Blue .

The doors were painted off the car along with all the other removable items.

Now the fitting up begins.

You have seen what goes into preparing a car for a repaint so we will not go into here.
A lot of muck,dust and elbow grease. :D :D

It is strange going into the workshop and not seeing this car in the same place since the work was started on bringing the car back to her former glory.
I am sure her future would have been bleak had I not chanced a sighting of her whilst visiting a farmer friend one evening last June.
The work carried out on her should see her live for another 40 years or so.

We are pleased we went for the colour change from Trafalgar Blue to the lighter Teal Blue.

It compliments our Austin 8cwt van shown in the photo.

A full 12 months MOT was attained yesterday to ensure a new beginning and life for the car.
I am sure if I had not spotted her that evening last June sitting in the farmers barn her life would have been uncertain, perhaps scrapped in a few more years. :(

Just a few little jobs to address today then she is ready to join my Teal Blue Austin 1972 van, they should look good together. :D[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

Looks really good, I'd chuck that air filter over the hedge though, either get a K&N for performance or stay with the standard one for some peace and quiet.

Was thinking of changing colour of my traveller (Almond green) to maroon b but would mean changing colour of interior ( light blue) to red or black but seeing teal blue with blue interior it seems to go well. Other option was porcelain green but not sure interior would go

I took the Traveller for an MOT this morning....she passed with no advisories.
The MOT tester is quite strict and does not let anything go through, even the odd splitpin that may have been missed from a suspension nut.
It keeps you on your toes when carrying out restoration work,no good at all a mate just letting a vehicle through as a favour.
