1098 on a smooth case
Hi
Can I put a new 1098cc engine on my smooth case gearbox. I have been told that the extra power will blow it up, but also been told that changing my head cam and manifold on my standard 948cc engine will give me a extra 15hp but wouldn't of that of blown my gearbox up also?
What if I fit the engine and run it would I need to change anything? Or is it a straight swap?
Cheers

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
can be done but will shorten the life of the box. Will also need the 948 pressed steel backplate and clutch still.
Personally, i'd swap to a 1098 box, at least as soon as you can, to 1) prevent a break-down and 2) to be able to sell the 948 box while it's still good and worth something.
Mind you, My convertible was running a 1098 when i bought it on a 948 box - now got a 948 back in it.

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
You will need a 1098 gearbox to go with a 1098 engine to be honest as the box will not like it for long, also what about the differential, no point upgrading the engine with a low ration diff, you will want a 1098 saloon diff minimum...

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
Matt which engine did you prefer? I have the 948 and the only reason I am considering getting a new 1098 because it's only £575. My 948 pending strip down needs a new head and a new ported one is £180!

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
it's hard to say - the car has all the other 948 running gear including the 4.55 diff. The 1098 when i bought it was really smooth, but unfortunately a total loss of oil pressure on Minors On Tour rather saw the end to that engine. It'll be fine with a reshell and a crank regrind i'm sure...Morrisminormo wrote:Matt which engine did you prefer? The 948 i've put in i bought as a second hand engine 'making a funny noise' off a fellow young member who had taken it out of his 1098 car -- turned out to be a valve burned out, so a new one lapped in and it's lovely. Really quiet and smooth. Not so much poke/acceleration as the 1098 quite, but much smoother running and quieter. Top speed not really affected as that's so determined by the diff. it's a 50/55 car really.

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
The gearbox won't 'blow up' - who tells you this stuff??? It will just wear out (even) more quickly with more power going through it - no matter what size of engine..... Show me the 'new' 1098 engine for £575......#somewhatsceptical

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
His feedback makes interesting reading
Does the £575 include VAT?

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
The picture shows a 1098 engine -do you have a 1098 to 'exchange' with it? At least it clearly states that it has been rebored, and the crank reground - so it's not just a 'coat of paint' recon..... I would ask if it has a new oil pump and new cam followers fitted - but assuming it has - it's fair enough at that price IF the work really has been done - and done correctly.

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
that looks like an engine centre willenhall engine.
At first i was impressed, but the second engine i know that came from there had issues rather quickly. Also, vat will be charged on top of this PLUS a surcharge awaiting a block requiring rebuild

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
Hi Matt
Where I work a bloke worked there for 6 months and he said to me he wouldn't by a engine from there. They cut corners with things. Eg a bloke brought his 16 valve engine in for a recon a new valves. They never had enough new valves so they put two old ones back in
So I'm staying clear of that idea. But there is this for sale
Morris Minor Engine Completely rebuilt in 2002 as a spare for my car but never used. I did have it bench running at the time. What you see is what you get as I have removed bits over the years to keep my minor running. At the time of rebuild I did keep a record :- Engine no 10MA-U-H-102831.Re bore to plus .020" - Main bearings -.010" - Big Ends - .020".She turns over nicely with bags of compression as you would expect.Grab a bargain it possibly cost me more than the staring price.Collection Only
£350
When I asked if it was unleaded he replied
Dear richard_bowker,
Hello,
According to the invoice I had at the time it says re bore, supply and fit new valve guides, supply and fit four exhaust valve inserts and supply new pistons.
So presume this was for unleaded fuel.
Regards[frame]

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
The paint on the second engine looks better
Not only that, it appears to be complete with manifold, thermostat, flywheel, etc. I don't know anything about the first engine, but am always wary of someone who starts talking about "rare". If it is a trader, then why is it cash on collection with no option for card payment?

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
Give the first one a miss, If its really has been run to test, why remove the thermostat housing. on the face of it the other one appears honest but you take your chances with engines.
Re: 1098 on a smooth case
I agree - the second one looks to be a better bet - no vat and no exchange required. Again I would check if a NEW oil pump has been fitted - before fitting it to the car - and prime the pump with plenty of oil -this is most important, especially as it has been lying around for a long time.......

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
Is it possible to mate a newer gearbox with an older 948 engine? Although the smooth case gearbox in my traveller hasn't been tested (other than moving backwards and forwards in the yard) and might be fine for some time it would be good to know if I could put any later ribbed gearbox in as they're frequently for sale.

Yes - no problem. Just use the clutch fork and carbon thrust from the old box.

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
I may be wrong but I believe that the mainshaft on the smooth case is a different length than the one on a ribbed case box.
Talk slow, think fast!
Re: 1098 on a smooth case
It's a possibility -but i don't think there will be much in it - not enough to be a problem.

Re: 1098 on a smooth case
Hi
Browsing the message board and came across this thread.
I once owned a S11 Split screen that had the original smooth case 803cc gearbox mated to a later 1098cc engine. I had no problems using the car as a runaround. Ireplaced the gearbox after three years but opted for another 803cc gearbox as I had grown fond of the long gearstick!
