Dynalite or alternator

Post by Cyril »

I have a suspicion that the so called dynamo in my Morris is actually a Dynalite which is an alternator that looks like a dynamo.

How can I tell if this is the case?
Thanks

Typical output for a small dynamo is about 25 amps...Dynalite equivalent approx. 40 amps plus.

Do you have an ammeter fitted to the car ? It might give you a clue if the previous owner fitted one.
A standard classic car ammeter would be a Lucas 30 amp ( + / - ) face.An uprated ammeter, to cope with the higher output would typically be a 60 amp ( + / - ).

Is lightweight – approx 60% weight of original unit.
That should be noticeable as long as you have an idea of what a dynamo weighs.
