Identifying my engine !!

Post by baldrick_the_cat »

......and no, I do know it's the big oily metal thing at the front, before any of you start !!!
I have a 1959 Moggie, but I'm struggling to identify what engine it has.
I have been told that it is probably a 1300, but I cannot find out where it has come from. There are 2 identifiers on the engine:-
An embossed stamp on the side of the engine block : WFM1120
A riveted plate next to the cylinder head :- identifier BHM 1463E 135637

Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like an Ital engine. (1300). My Ital engine has WFM1025 stamped on the side.

There are a few extenal details that can identify the engine better. Any chance you could post a picture of it?

I'm guessing it is an Ital 1300 engine (A+).

Is the distributor held in by a fork with a bolt through it into the block or a pinch bolt like the Minor 1000 engine?

Oh and is the oil filter positioned at about 45 degrees to the vertical on the rear left-hand side of the engine? (looking straight at it)

You can see the fork and filter in this piccy:

Ignore the coil position though, that's just my doing!

Kev, I'm sure that Cam remembered to replace the sump before re-using the engine.

Would you have remembered to replace it I wonder? Your memory isn't what is used to be......

Cam. That grinding on the big end caps, is that a result of balancing the engine? There's quite a difference between them! :o

Sorry it's not much better than this - problems with camera / website
Anyway, sounds like it is an Ital engine.
From memory, Ital's don't exactly have the greatest of reputations.....any ideas as to anything specific I should look out for ?

true, but the 1275 A+ was the latest and best development of the a series engine. they are very tough and reliable.

the ital was an awfull car but the engine was a gem
missing life with a moggie

Yep. Speak to MED racing engines for more info. They did all the machining work.

That's definately a 1300 in-line engine. Either late Marina or Ital. Either way it's a good engine. Very strong and a good basis for tuning.

Nothing really to worry about generally. As Turbominor says: the engine was a gem! :D
