Help again ,please ? I have removed distributor to give it some TLC . How do I check the vacuum unit to see if it is working off the car, before re- installing it ?? Cheers

This sounds disgusting
, but slip your tongue over the pipe after sucking on it. It should hold vacuum after moving as Ray described.
If it doesn't, then the diaphram in the advance unit is leaking (assuming the pipe is OK).
Sometimes, sucking to test the advance will move it OK, but if it's not holding vacuum then it's an air leak that the system won't like.

advance
After a few doses of releasing Duck Oil and a bit of persuasion I wrapping my mouth around the end of the vacuum unit. Not a nice taste
'Er indoors came outdoors to watch the unit to see if it twitched ?
Much chest expansion was required after prior traaining exercises -- the auto advance moved and seems to be ok !! Yippee
Thanks for advice
