Cheese grater research....god I am boring

Post by Maximas »

I have only just started to research my moggy....wife thinks I am potty...one of my 1st questions is how many convertable split screen cheese graters were made and is there a list of how many are left...I mean the one before the slat grill...not the low light...any help would be good..

i believe that there are production figures in ray newell's book - the original morris minor. i'm afraid i dont have a copy to hand at the moment but someone else may do. - if you havent got a copy, it's a very interesting read and i believe it's available from the regalia link on the side of this page - or if you'rte at the NEC, ray might even sign you a copy next weekend - i'm sure mine is very rare as an unsigned copy ;-)

In terms of those remaining, POMMREG would be the man to contact, as he will have the best idea of anyone.
Sorry i can't be of more help.

Hi Maximas????

Just browsing the site and came across your question and the reason nobody has answered is probably because it is rather complicated.

Early (splitscreen) cars are categorised into two main groups. MM series cars from 1948 to 1953 and Series 2 cars from 1953 to 1956.

The cheesegrater grille was fitted to all MM's and continued into the Series II cars from 1953 to October 1954 when the slatted grille was introduced.

Lowlight Minors ran from 1948 to Jan 1951 in this country when the headlights were raised up onto the front wings, however early exported cars to the USA had raised headlight wings fitted to comply with Californian laws.

Your question needs refining in that we need to know if you are asking about MM Tourers (with removable side windows), MM convertibles or Series 2 convertibles.

I am sure someone will come forward with numbers built, but numbers known to the club can be provided by the MM register and Series 2 register but those figurse won't tell how many are still around. I found my 1952 MM convertible recently and it wasn't known to the club.

Regards Ian
Busy collecting parts for my '52 MM Convertible and 1949 Saloon restorations. :o

Only keep records for LCVs & GPO van allocations.

For saloons/travellers etc. just list chassis/body/engine details.

I'd advise contacting Mike Perry, he's your best bet!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Hi, Idon't think there's a distinction between chassis numbers re convertibles and saloons on the early cars so production records may be difficult to decipher. (may be wrong). MM register and Series 2 reg may help on survivors, and for what its worth I've got one too, so thats two! :D
cheers

I believe that the Series 11 saloon and convertible register is hoping to get up and running again shortly with a couple of new volunteers so may have more information soon.

Contact Stevey on the messageboard.

Too many Minors so little time.....
