Would be an Austin Marina over there, but I'd have thought them far too basic for an American motorhome.

If you are going to build a custom rear end, then the commercial (van / pickup) will offer a better (and separate) chassis. If you cut a Traveller, then you will need to reinforce things.

I've seen a 1970 MM with the engine mounted sideways--does this make a difference, as for as performance, durability, parts, repair costs and expertise, etc? are there disadvantages to this drive train orientation?

Anything is possible .......it may have Mini parts - it may have something else. Who knows !!? It may be very well put together - it may be an utter bodge up. You're on your own with this one!
