Yes I thought it may be something to do with the door switch I will check it tomorrow weather permitting

Pulled out the passenger door switch and it was attached to nothing .
There is a silver cable that is earthed to the glove compartment but I am assuming this is from the car aerial?

most likley the wire has come of that switch and is earthing inside the body, that's how the pillar switches work. IIRC you gan see a bit inside if you take the n/s glove box out there a long slot thatI lost my wiper cable grommett down. But whe have an endescope thingy to help om that front.

On my Traveller the door switches join on the drivers side, two wires from door switches and the brown/Black in a 4 way bullet connector The brown/black then goes up the pillar with the purple wire to the light.

You may be able to find this connector via the large hole under dash, but may be easier to remove the drivers side glove box to see these wires/connector. When you find this connector you can remove each wire in turn to find the wire with earth that lighting the light.

The silver cable is most likely the head cloth tension wire, leave well alone!

Andy, never thought of looking behind the drivers side glove compartment, will do that this weekend.
Both courtesy door switches have perished so ordered some new ones from David Manners Group.
Maybe I will find the car aerial there also
My moggy doesn't give its secrets away that easily I have found.

Hi
I checked behind the drivers glove box and I found the car Aerial Yayyyy! I threaded through to the passenger side ready to install the stereo.
From the courtesy light down the pillars came two of the wires. The purple that went in to the fuse box and the brown wire with black stripe that was connected to a 4 bullet connector.
I have drawn a diagram (Teacher by profession). Am I right in thinking that the remaining two free connectors need to be attached to the courtesy door switches?[frame][/frame]

It looks like that wire/block supplies the light with the 12volt + all the time. Purple i think it was in your first pics. The othe 2 wire are the earth or return connections the black one should be a permanent earth so when you slide the switch on the light fitting to "ON" the bulb lights. When the slide switch is in the "OFF" position and the bulb is off when you open a door with a pillar switch the pillar switch connects the other earth wire to the car body. So the the brown/black wire comes down the A pillar and must split somewhere so one wire goes to left hand door the other to right hand door so as if any door opens it gives the bulb an earth making the circuit just as sliding the switch does.

The 4 way connector should have only three wires connected. two door/pillar switch wires and one wire (brown/black)going up the side of the screen to the roof area with the purple power feed. Not sure where the wire to power has come from, but it should not be in the connector.

You now have a new problem - where should this power feed go

The only power (12volt+) wire in the light fitting should be the purple one. The black should be a permanent earth IE fastened to the bodywork somewhere. The brown and black should be ann earth via a pillar switch (or 2 if on both doors)
Does that brown wire in your connector diagram actually go to a 12volt (power as you say) or are you measuring 12volt with a meter or a bulb, if you are then remove the bulb from the light fitting and see if the volts are zero. If they are then the brown wires should go to the door swiches

Is it possible that that connector block & the brown wires in are unrelated to the courtesy light?

NO brown wires in that area - brown is full/unfused battery volts.

Then you really need to physically trace where the brown/black wire from the light goes. It should only go to the door switches and nowhere else.

Managed to sort this problem out. Original wiring must have been done by a ______ (I will let you fill in the blank)
For some reason the brown/black wire from the roof went into the 4 way bullet connector and then was connected to the stem of the steering wheel ??? with the wires that control the indicators??
I disconnected this and indicators still worked but I noticed that the courtesy light would now switch on and off manually instead of being constantly live .
I then connected the brown/black wire to the door switch and it came on and off as the door opened and closed.
