Changing oil in shocks?

Post by Morrisminormo »

Hello
I've been looking around on this forum and came across changing the oil in the front shocks ( lever arm ) to a thicker type? How much of a improvement/difference will this make?

My shocks seem a little sensitive, passenger side can bottom out when car is loaded with a passenger and two dogs. Is it easy to drain the oil?

Tomorrow is my upgrade day for my moggy, I've go a set of minilites to fit, halogen headlights (Wipac) altonater conversion, and a 88 degree thermostat.

:D

To remove the old oil just remove the valve assembly and rock the front suspension up and down. Be careful removing the valve you could lose parts easily, use SAE 30 or 40 to refill them. To do the rears you need to take them off the car,the process is the same.
If the dampers are bottoming out now it is most likely there's no oil in them :D

Well done Richard 'dampers' not shocks.. Take the fill plug out too - to allow the old/stinking/thin oil to drain more easily. Flush through with the new oil a couple of times - it takes time. Use SAE 40 if you can get it (NOT 10W40...) SAE 50 is even better. The difference will amaze you..... Go back after a week and top up again - but always leave a small air space just under the fill hole.
