Replacement engine
I've been offered a replacement 1098 but it's been dry stored for 30yrs. He wants £25 for it, worth a punt

Re: Replacement engine
Why do you think not Lambretta??? Should be worth £25 all right. Don't even TRY to turn it over by hand until you have squirted lots of oil down the bores......

Re: Replacement engine
He said they couldn't turn it over at first but can now. I would also have to add fuel costs to that, it's about 80miles away

Re: Replacement engine
I should coco is generally used sarcastically to mean 'no way!'...... To the OP - you are never going to find an engine right next door - so 80 miles will be well worthwhile. Unfortunate that they have 'turned' it - they may have broken the rings..... I would strip and inspect as soon as you get it home - without any more 'turning'........

Re: Replacement engine
I think the smiley was there to donate the use of irony.
Dry stored suggests light rusting, very little if the plugs were left in.
Unless massive force was used to get it turning, broken rings is pessimistic.

Re: Replacement engine
Unfortunately - the engine would have at least one inlet and one exhaust valve lying open - allowing moist air (and spiders/small furries) in.... The fact it wouldn't turn suggests it had stuck - of course we don't know how hard they had to 'try' to make it turn. Definitely buy it - just don't turn it.....

Re: Replacement engine
Is it worth me asking how he unstuck it? Wording it diplomatically

Re: Replacement engine
By all means enquire as you hand over the £25.....but don't let this bargain slip through your fingers!

Re: Replacement engine
£25 for a complete engine?
Why do I never come across bargains like that - even if you have to spend a couple of hundred quid refurbishing it's still a great find!

Re: Replacement engine
What about a Bo-Bo?
Take the head off should you get it, this should be the bare minimum inspection and would give an idea of the general condition.
