Done and Dusted?? :) It's a recon engine - so probably the initials of whoever did the job.

My gold seal had AH stamped on it in a similar fashion, so BMC could be right.

Ah now that's interesting - I was wondering if DD was maybe a code to show the regrind size on the crank ie 40/40 But AH doesn't fit with that. Would be easy to argue that AH = Austin Healey of course - adding an extra £50 to it's value !!

Well actually it does on a recon unit. I found this online - The first letter relates to the new bore size (oversized). The second letter is the reground Crankshaft size (undersized).

Letter Size changes (Thousandths of an inch)

A Standard
B 10 THOU
C 15 THOU Undersized (Crank only)
D 20 THOU
E 25 THOU Undersized (Crank only)
F 30 THOU
G 35 THOU Undersized (Crank only)
H 40 THOU
J 45 THOU Undersized (Crank only)
K 50 THOU
L 55 THOU Undersized (Crank only)
M 60 THOU

Mine was F’ ‘H’. This according to the above information would make the pistons +30 thou oversized and the Crankshaft -40 thou undersized which is what it was when i took it apart :D

My gold seal was standard bore, so looks like the above chart is the answer.
Still going to tell people it's an Austin Healey motor though
