unsteady Speedo ??

Post by Bantam »

Hi All.
Can anyone please help me and tell me how to get my speedometer needle to remain steady on my 1955 Minor, as it moves up/down about 7mph while travelling, and does not stay stable at any speed.
Many thanks

First stab at the problem is to remove and check that the inner cable is not frayed or lacking lubrication. If it is not frayed but dry very very lightly lubricate the inner cable and refit. If it is frayed replace the complete speedo cable.

2nd vote for sticky cable - or perhaps just an unwise run on the cable - with a tight bend...

Thanks Guys,
I have already replaced the cable (without kinks) and same problem still exists?
Any other ideas?

Many thanks

Still say sticky cable...did you clean out the outer sheath -and apply thin film of grease?

Mine had the same problem and it was definitely the inner cable catching in the outer sleeve and then releasing causing the needle to jump from low to high reading and back again.
completely new cable assembly cured the fault. :D
