Well, if there are no baffles in it I think it could be the cause.

Is the air filter a K&N one?
When properly cleaned and oiled it should be possible to see tiny holes in the surface if you look at a light through it.

Air filter is one of those chrome pancake type. Went into town today, it feels much better especially when pulling away from sitting at a set of traffic lights. Before I had to rev the engine a little first, now I can just pull away normally

Checked the plugs again & they're as black as the Ace of spades! I can't screw the mixture nut up towards the carb any further. Do I need a different needle? If so what one & where from? Thanks

You need to check the fuel level in the carb, remove the bell and look down at the jet/bridge - any evidence of over flowing? - and is the needle fitted with the shoulder flush with base of piston? Do you know what needle is in there at the moment? And are you sure the 'choke' is going off completely? If the carb is old - the jet could be worn. Have a look at the top face- is the hole round - or slightly oval??

Needle is ABB, I've took the carb off & refitted the original for now so I can check the 1 1/2" carb
