Van back

Post by 1098 »

Will this repair ? The rear end of SLM 454,53776 of Grantown on Spey. The Royal Mail, remember, nobody does it better.[frame]Image[/frame]Roof not too bad, when you consider it's been at the mercy of many a Scottish Highland winter, for thirty or more years. I kinda think, after all that punishment, it deserves a refurb. 8)

Anything is possible just depends how much time you want to put in and how good your fabrication and welding skills are, the real difficult bit will be if rust has got deep into the seams.

Thanks for your reply Kevin. It's a labour of love. I certainly don't have the skills, time, or money,at the moment.
But..one day. one thing is certain,it will never be scrapped.

Must have been a shock to find wood that has holes corresponding to the dr hinges!

Are they original BMC items?
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

I love Grantown- on-Spey. Has a fabulous wee restaurant that does best haggis in Scotland (in my opinion!). This van back definitely deserves to be repaired - just take it inch by inch and you will do a great job :D

Looks a 'goodun'! The important bits are there and it's straight - not knocked about or damaged. No bits needed that you can't get....
cheers

I love Grantown- on-Spey
It's nice enough but usually only somewhere I stop at briefly on the way up to the nicer bits of coast.
As for the van back... basd on how far it is to get up there and back I would guess it's a limited set of buyers, unless the seller wants to spend £150 crating it up in ply and 4x2 to ship it!

Thanks Iain,it's pretty rough actually. Roof is ready to blow off. It's the back off SLM 454,so,deserves a chance. I don't see the point of simply throwing another back on,especially after all the effort of getting it here.

Looking forward to seeing SLM 454 returned to the road, think it'll be the
only surviving GPO Minor to carry the Scottish 'Kings' crown.

A 1275cc engine & servo brakes free zone!!!!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

That gives me a lot of inspiration. I always wanted a Scottish Mail van, wish I could have found one in better condition though.
Still, not many survivors, how many ? so, well worth all the effort.
