Yaris engine issue.

Post by davidpidge »

Not Morris related but as this forum is an endless supply of mechanical knowledge I thought someone might be able to help me. I have a Toyota Yaris 1.0 petrol. Done 124.000 miles exactly as of this morning. A couple of weeks ago the engine developed a noticeable 'ticking' noise that only appears when the engine is revved up and is louder when under load/accelerating. It's obviously a common noise from old, tired or ropey engines but it has definitely only just started making the noise as it's usually a very quiet engine.

It's been serviced by Toyota since new up until the last service. During the last service the rocker cover was damaged when removing one of the ignition coil packs so a used rocker cover was fitted. I have just noticed a build up of oil/muck which appears to be weeping from the front left of the rocker cover other than this there don't appear to be any problems. No leaks on the ground. Not using oil etc.

Any ideas or could it be one of many things? Thanks in advance!

David (still without a moggie)

Hadn't thought of that. The water pump went on my transit but it was making a persistent squeaking like a dodgy bearing noise. Any way to check a water pump to physically spot faults?

I hadn't thought of that one either. Take the belt off and see if the ticking persists I guess.
It wasn't the only answer the internet came up with, try this search and take your pick!

Valve clearances seems to be a popular theory. I did wonder about it being a valve problem but that's as far as knowledge goes on them. The noise does appear to be coming from inside the engine. For the price Yariss are going on ebay at the moment I might as well a new one for the cost of any repairs! Complete engines are £250.

Several people said it was nothing to worry about and pretty typical.
