defective vacuum advance

Post by moggiegeek »

Noticing recently that despite having timing spot on for starting/idling as soon as hills are encountered then I get pinking. Tried retarding ignition but then starting etc is out of kilter.
Just checked vacuum advance mechanism by sucking on the tube - no vacuum and no moving of base plate - in fact I could probably breathe in and out through tube.
This indicates vacuum mechanism shot I guess - what would be best to do? New distributer and if so which kind as I intend to run 12g940 head, HIF38 as in earlier optimistic post today. Is there any advantage in Aldon type products for example?

You can buy and fit new vacuum advance units very easily, and far cheaper than a replacement distributor!

Indeed you can just buy/fit a vac advance - but if the dizzy has seen better days anyway - consider a complete new 45D from accuspark or simonbbc (search ebay for them) - either with good old points, or electronic version.. And no - the 'Aldon' dizzies are nothing special - masterstroke of marketing though !

I can certainly say I've found the accuspark 45D to be excellent on my daily traveller and also my Series III Land -Rover :D
