carb float replacement

The carb on my 69 ex telephone van seems to be the later type but it does have a copper float (which doesn't any longer - full of cracks)
can i replace it with a modern plastic assembly?

On the earlier H2 carbs with the copper float, the float chamber lid was held on by a central nut and the bolt went throgh the centre of the float.
On the later HS2 carbs the float chamber lid was held on by three screws around the circumference of the float chamber. The plastic float was attached to a pivot on the lid.
The floats are not interchangeable between these carbs.
If you have the HS2 carb with the same design float chamber but with a hinged brass float then it should be interchangeable.

99% certain that it is an HS2 but with a copper float - it also had a simple silver steel needle originally which i have already replaced with the modern counterpart and cage
I have just ordered a plastic float replacement from one of the morris parts companies who seemed to think that it PROBABLY would be ok to fit
I will post if it worked or not tomorrow.
The old copper float was beyond hope with a series if vertical cracks all the way round

Had a look at the exploded diagrams of various carbs
mine is an HS2 and the brass float is certainley not like the earlier type with a hole up the middle for the bolt so i'm hoping for a swap tomorrow! Watch this space!

Well the answer is that they are not interchangeable!
The pivot point on the nylon float is not in the correct position relative to the lid and the stop at the back prevents the float from falling far enough to open the valve.

It seems that when the nylon float was introduced to later models of the HS2 carb the lid design was changed
They are suppling me with a complete new lid assembly, gasket, jet, needle and float for thirty something quid delivered.
I did manage to solve the problem temporarily however - i cut the hinge point off the nylon float and put in in the chamber upside down - it still floats better than the old one, closes the needle and does not seem to jam - truth is it would probably do the job just as well but it would be a bit of a worry as a permanant bodge!

It seems strange that you still had a copper float on a '69 van.
Maybe it was not the original carb.
All the HS2 carbs list the same float, WZX 1300

30 Quid is a LOT! You will pick up a complete HS2 carb for ~ £5 - or better still - get a larger HS4 or an HIF 38 and let that engine breathe!

Are there any still available? I also have a Morris 8, same carb, but would be nice to get both running at the same time.

Ahh now that's the H1 carb -1 1/8" diameter throat. Not so common these days......
