I've just had a similar problem on one of my Minors - in the end it turned out to be the master cylinder.

Oh no, they are a real pain to replace aren't they..? When I was adjusting the rod to the pedal the master cylinder did look quite corroded...

I think it might just have sorted it! Took Ruby out tonight for a drive and for the first time in goodness knows how long she was perfect! Many thanks for all your help and advice
