Dont worry it will be black in the not too distant future, although the label on the jumper did state machine washable :D I also have a wipe clean vinyl one also patent pending :roll:

I think your temps are too high! Given your official BMC thermometer it looks like the proper Morris range is only 60-75 degrees. :D

Forget the cracked head :lol: It was cracked all right, no doubt about it. Now its only purpose is an ash tray.

Packing a 1275 head and hs4 under the bonnet now. She's an animal!

Totally agree! The whole conversion cost £120, as a ratio of £ to bhp gain its unreal!

My mind has been blown and my big ends will soon be following if I don't take it a little easier on the loud pedal :D

I've got the bug for tuning now! are there any other such mods I haven't found yet that deliver such bang for ya buck.

Cams don't really seem a cheap or viable option with limited valve clearance and all.

I have already got plans to scrap the moggy manifold (totally after having already cut off the inlet) and make a custom exhaust ... considering a side exit, any ideas on a tuned lengths?

If you fancy getting really hairy chested then I have a manifold to fit a Webber twin choke down draught (28/36 or such like) that I may be wolling to sell. Wont do much for fuel consumption though!

No point changing the cam - the one in the engine is perfect for the rev range on a 1098 engine (max 6000). I fitted a 3 branch ex MG 1100 with a Cooper S straight through silencer (NOT LCB which is only effective for 'hot' cams) and there was some improvement, and a lot more noise....

More noise is not something I desire from the exhaust, the induction noise from the hs4 is already ridiculous. Are there any alternative air boxes that would quiet down the carb? I currently have a pancake filter.

As for the exhaust maybe I will just re manufacture the original exhaust without the restrictive crushed bends in the pipe. I reckon there should be reasonably good gain from a well manufactured std bore exhaust over the terrible after market rubbish I have fitted. Even a blind man would be disappointed to see thoes bends!

Air cleaner etc from a Mini/Marina/Maestro will be quieter ..... I just happened to have a Cooper S straight through silencer lying about - a normal silencer (or two) will of course be quieter.

It has a k&n filter inside, is similar to Triumph Herald just a bit deeper. It works nicely though and retains some "period" look.

My standard exhaust was rusty (with holes!) so it wasn't an option to keep; fortunately my dad had a brand new "bigbore" twin box system kicking around and the Ital downpipe, so i used that. To be fair, it is probably a bit of an overkill on my 948, but was cheaper than buying a new exhaust (as it was free!)

If you start modifying much more than you have already, you will end up getting into the silly world of "oh i'll just change x, but whilst i'm there it makes sense to change y". I know from girst hand credit card experience with my old Minor!!

Also, not sure what spec the rest of your running gear is, but if you go too nuts you will need to look at brakes/axles/gearboxes, again, i've been there.
I'm finding it very hard to keep myself in check this time round!!

Cool, I will definitely have a go at the airbox, I may try grafting the minor one back on.

I know all about money pits. I don't even know why I'm tuning it, I should be saving for the full restoration that looms. The engine, gbox, brakes and suspension are sound but the rest of the car is falling apart. Even the wood that looked great last year is looking beyond what a fresh coat of varnish can hide :cry:

The standard air filter box is hopeless - I tried it, even with no filter inside - it seriously affected engine performance.

I went away camping in the moggy this weekend. A round trip of 220 miles I achieved ........ 17mpg at a steady 60mph!

As much as I love my tuned up engine I don't think my pockets are deep enough for that kind of mpg. Back on goes the hs2 :cry:

There's something wrong with your set up then my friend.

My set up is pretty similar to yours and i am averaging 30mpg with a 4.55 diff and standard gearbox so revs are quite high on the motorway at 60 (around 4000rpm).
It's not the carb that will be causing that as such, it may be you have an air leak or something which has meant you needed to richen the mixture or something similar.
