rear van doors

Post by Marigold »

HI just appealing for any knowledge or help out there. I have taken the rear doors off my van to deal with the rust on my hinges and refit some seals. Seals all in fine. and I 've dealt with the rust but I cannot get the doors to sit right again. is there any trick or is it just fiddling with the hinges? :( Thanks

I seem to remember there is scope for fitting them upside down to the opposite side.
Did you dismantle them?

Hi, No I didn't take the handle off and they are sign written so I at least can remember which way round they should be. I may have got the hinges muddled up but I think I have sorted them out now into the right pairs. Am I right in thinking that the screw heads of the bolts with the springs on that join the two bits of the hinge together were on the top of each hinge and not opposite on the top and bottom hinge for each door. Other than that i am stuck as to what else is wrong

It sounds to me like you have got your hinge parts mixed up..... do you have any photos of how it was to compare with how it is now? The top and bottom castings are subtly different on a traveller and probably on a van too?

Hi, with hindsight that is such a good idea. I thought I had them all labelled correctly and laid out on bits of paper but I think they have been mixed up. I will post some pictures of the way they are now tomorrow, bit too dark to take them now. Thanks for the help

All 4 sets of hinges have the bolt heads at the top. I also think you will find that all 4 parts that go on the van body are different and the top parts are also all different to each other and each part has a particular opposite.

Hi, Sorry for delay been at work all day. Here are photos of the doors as they now are. They almost shut but are obviously not quite right. So any ideas welcome. First is the whole back and then the hinge photos start from top left, bottom left, top right and then bottom right.[frame]Image[/frame]

Looks like your top left and bottom left are wrong

Is the brass ball fitted to the top left?

Just a guess but try swapping top and bottom brackets bolted to the pillar on the left, leave the arms on the doors as they are.

Thanks will try. The ball is fitted in the top left but whichever ball we put in it looks the same in the end. We tried to match the hinges up with the rust marks they had left behind but will have another move round and see what happens. Thanks

Bottom left on van back is wrong, you can see that by the angle where the ball sits in, so the only option for that piece is top left as suggested in last post. Each piece has some cast numbers on the back, I think I may have outed a spare set I had but will look tomorrow in case I still have them.

Looking more closely the left hand hinge set, complete as you have it, needs swapping for the set at the top. Also on the right hand side just the parts bolted to the doors need swapping over. The pieces that fit to the doors always have the 2 fatter looking pieces at the bottom ( they are only slightly fatter).

If the Traveller uses the same hinges, this is what I came up with when sorting my Traveller hinges.
The hinge bodies had numbers cast into them, 17, 19, 21, 23, 18-20, and 22-24.
I got a good fit with this placement:
Top Left; 19 & 18-20
Top Right; 17 & 18-20
Lower Left; 23 & 22-24
Lower Right; 21 & 22-24
I grabbed the following from somewhere on this forum: Long arms attach to the doors with the longest going to the top hinges. The bottom hinge pillar base is 90 degree whereas the top one is slightly angled.
Hope this helps.
