Alternator fitted with reuse of dynamo bracket to carry the coil. A couple a washers inserted to correctly align the alternator pulley with the crank and water pump pulleys.[frame][/frame]

Coil refitted, a very simple couple of wires to the solenoid and regulator, ignition on, pull starter and happy days!

The easiest job I have done on Boris to date.

MarkyB - the dynamo mount on the alternator works like the strap did previously on the dynamo except you need bolts rather than the earlier studs.

Is it me or is the coil facing downwards towards the distributor?
I'm not sure if that's a good angle for the coil to sit at long term, perhaps someone else on here will clarify?

You are right, the coil does point downwards at the connections end.

I have the same concern you expressed but read somewhere that early landrover coils are mounted 'upside down' . The intention is the realign to level but over enthusiasm to try it out got the better of me. I'll realign things today.

Today's task was to fit the reversing light. A gift to myself acquired at the 100th anniversary bash.

A couple of coats of the junior mechanic's white nail varnish (one has to look one's best ), a good scratch at the terminals, a bit of new wire and the old bulb was reincarnated.[frame][/frame]

The gear lever reversing light switch. How neat is that?

I have yet to bend the lever arm to suit the gear lever movement and to complete the wiring - tomorrow's task.

As a dud sparks, can someone explain why the on/off switch has 3 terminals?

Will 3 amp rating be be ok?

We're the carpets once that blue?

The 3 terminals will be marked summat like "C" this is common so put 12volt to this one. The other two will be marked "NO" & "NC" that's normaly open and normaly closed. The wire to your lamp should go on "NO" normaly open. When you operate the switch the "NO" contacts close switching the lamp on. "NC" terminal will not be required just leave blank.

3 Amp switch. Well assuming a 21 Watt bulb is fitted to your lamp then 12volts divided into 21watts = 1.75amps so it will be ok.

Your clear maths on the switch rating will serve me for years to come and was clearly amongst the many things I missed in physics whilst busy chatting

I have just bought the attached multimeter and haven't a clue how to work it. I'll start by checking if the battery is 12volts and work things out from there.

The 200 on the green section at the bottom opposite "OFF" is continuity for testing switches and circuits etc.

the white section that runs from about 9 o clock to 12 o clock is DC voltage so you would test for 12volts with meter set to the 20 on this white scale put the red probe on + ie positive and the black one on - ie negative, If you get the leads wrong way round meter will display it as a - negative voltage.
The white section to the right of the off position is AC voltage up to 500 & 200 respectively. So to test mains voltage you would select 500volts AC, but if you didn't know that then don't go there!


Incidentally the best way to check for bad connections on 12 volts is to use the volt drop method measure the volts accros a circuits return to the battery if there is more than a few MILLI VOLTS the earth is bad, forget continuity or resistance testing.
