If you pay the fee - DVLA will give you all the information on your car. And of course Heritage can give you the build history - and Dealer information - again for a fee, or go along and look it up....

Does this apply to all cars, and give you the name and address of every previous owner back to the first one?

I wrote to DVLA for the former keepers of my Traveller. I think the fee was £5. It's basically a copy of the original logs books, with the previous owners addresses, so you can track where you car's lived.

I've used the DVLA £5 service - the V888 form needs to be completed with a reason as to why you want the information.
A good reason is that you wish to create a history file for your Historic Class pride and joy.
This is how I found out about the "cherished number transfer" my Traveller underwent in 1985, its orginal Index number, who it went to etc. Also the documentation showed when the 803cc engine was changed for a 1098cc one in 1986. This is one step a lot of owners/garages fail to carry out after an engine transplant - informing DVLA of a details change.
The data only goes back to when the old fold-out Log Books started being replaced by the V5 single sheet ones and if local licensing authorities had micro-filmed the originals and sent the data on to DLVC (as it was then).
In the case of my Traveller, the fold-out log book was replaced, for whatever reason, by another fold-out book by Surrey County Council and they did not transfer the manufacturer's colour description (which I had hoped to get) and used the generic "green".
Unfortunately, for me, Surrey Historical Archives trashed all the old records they hadn't passed onto to Wales.

I've currentlly got a V888 enquiry going for my Series MM - they do take quite a few weeks.

The next stage is to save up for the Heritage Certificate ...
