Dizzy Removal?? !!

Post by Arfron »

I want to remove the dizzy to replace the capacitor etc . and give the unit a bit of TLC . Not wishing to disturb the timing and un-doing the dizzy clamp ; has anyone tried to remove the two bolts holding the clamp ? If so , any suggestions on how to reach them ,especially the bottom one ??
Cheers  Arfron ( Ps . Happy Christmas or , Nadolig Llawen , to all my readers !!)

I've always slackened off the clamping bolt because it's more accessible and quicker. Try using a correction pen "Tippex" or similar to mark both the clamp face and the distributor body before removal then just line up the two marks on refitting. The tip of the pen is usually fine enough for a thin line rather than a blob. Always works for me. However, I always check the timing before and after anyway but lining up the white marks will ensure its not far out and a vernier adjustment usually suffices.
I use the same stuff to mark the timing pointers and crankshaft pulley each time. White paint becomes dirty and faded becomes difficult to see properly.
It works similarly well when removing a steering wheel to line up the correct splines on refitting.

Arfron,
The 2 bolts that hold the clamp to the block are just about accessible but they are fiddly. Unfortunately you will find that the holes are elongated anyway so it won't serve the purpose you want.
You should reset the timing periodically anyway, and if you are removing the dizzy, re-setting the timing can't be avoided.
