fuel gague maintenance

I've got a 'tap on the speedo glass to get a fuel gauge reading' fuel gauge. What's the best cleaning method.. ?

Hi,
I adjusted the little nuts on the back of the fuel guage until it seems to work: I loosened them, slid them up / down the little channel the bolts run in and then re-tightened them, took a few go's but now touch wood...............
Other than that, as BMC said, you'll have to keep tapping (which is what I got fed up with, so I decided to have a play.....).....

I have two fuel guages like this, the other I haven't got quite right yet but then it's off the car at the moment anyway.
It must be their age..... :lol:
I have seen new replacements advertised, which look the same and appear to fit into the same aperture in the speedo, they come from Australia but they're not cheap....

One thing I have noticed is that they don't seem to like the tank being run to empty, though that might just be the sender in the tank...... :-?

I had a fuel gauge that needed tapping too, made me feel like a fighter pilot prior to take off, it was a v8 powered beast though.
Keep tapping as suggested,it adds character.

Make sure that your speedo cluster has a good ground (earth).

I kept on tapping - then one day the needle fell off :o - Have changed the speedo and the new/old gauge works.

Sometimes the pointer can rub against the gauge face, causing a sticky action which a good tap would free off. You can gently bend the pointer away from the face if this is the problem. Note this should be checked if this is suspected to be the case with the gauge face vertical, as it would be in the car.

It should NOT be oiled.

In that car it would probably be the better solution to allow it to stick in the 'full' position... :lol: :roll:
