There's actually quite a lot of items on the MOT test that are totally irrelevant to our cars, and due to the lovely new regs coming in because of our membership to the EU (Dig,dig) - a whole raft of very silly checks are now being introduced to bring us in line with Spain and Germany particularly. One country requires any non-original body styling to be removed prior to testing and another will not pass wheels that were not originally supplied with the car. Emissions testing is obviously not practical for older cars, as is steering locks (yes my Land Rover Discovery just failed on that one, because the locking mech rotated a few degrees in 'lock' - no affect on steering un-locked though!).

A garage charging a smaller fee for an older car (pre 1960) trimmed down MOT, is good thinking in my book. I've raised this with my local garage - but they have yet to instigate this,

You can remove a factory fitted steering lock and get a pass as long as there is a permanent anti theft device thats acts upon the brakes. steering, transmission or prevents the engine from being started EG factory fitted imobilisor

That's interesting! My Disco's a '96 (shed on wheels). I argued the toss and they reluctantly knocked it down to an advisory - along with 2 pages of others!
