Setting Tappets

When setting tappets I know I adjust by rule of 9, BUT, do I adjust 8 when spring is compressed on 1, or when spring is open on 1?? Simple question I know, but I'd like to be sure

when the one your going to adjust is open i.e. the valve is closed,

if it's compressed then you can't get feelers in ,good luck

Have been waiting for Bmc to correct you but no sign of him doing so yet so me being pedantic there are no tappets in a Minor OHV engine only cam followers, rockers and valve clearances if that is what you are working on.

Been away from computer for a few hours........ As above - no 'tappets'. And yes - adjust #1 when #8 is compressed (1 +8 = 9) etc , and so on. My strong recommendation is 15 thou on the exhausts - and 12 thou on the inlets.
