'51 MM Engine numbers

Post by gtt1951 »

Where is the 918's engine number located? Bulkhead plate show a number of 89300[frame]Image[/frame] and the only number I can see, on the engine, is the one cast into the cylinder head of 31698 (and what looks like a "QualCast" logo near it[frame]Image[/frame]
Any help/info greatly appreciated.

Clean up the top of the block by the front of the cylinder head, it should be stamped there. or a brass plate on bell housing nearside top next to oil pressure gauge connection. :)

Thanks Smithkids, I've just had my head under the bonnet with mirror and torch, and have drawn a blank.
The top of the block at the front is painted, but very smooth with no signs of any stampings. The area surrounding the oil pressure pipe take of has nothing showing.
The only numbers I've found are the 2 on the top casting - one is 31693 and the other, smaller font number, is 121251.
I did find, however, the Nuffied Metals plaque on the bulkhead crossmember, driver's side, just above the engine.
Cheers.

Try looking under the dynamo for the brass plaque on the side of the block

this is mine, I am sure about this, because this number is at my '51 car also

But this is my spare engine, the number has another place:[frame]Image[/frame]
A little bit older as yours, but maybe the same place.

But after 60 years, you are never sure the original engine is stille there.....

Not the original engine i'm afraid. From memory it had a BMC rebuilt engine fitted, the round brass engine number under the dynamo had been replaced with a square one rivited to block just infront of the bell housing.

Ah. Thank you Tommy - I was hoping that it might have the original one in it. I've not seen anything, at all, on the top and sides of the engine. Was the riveted number on the underside?
I'm asking all these questions as I haven't yet had back the V5C in my name - shame I couldn't scan the original doc the owner had.
