So is the random rapid ticking something that needs to be sorted? or normal behaviour?
Yes I know fill the tank record milage fill the tank again check how much you put vs miles driven. But As I'm topping up quite often and the pumps 'click' and different times (some actually squirt back at me) some stop well before it's full, I think the short filler neck and reasonably shallow tank make it hard to get an accurate version of 'full' from different pumps.
Always go to the same Filling Station and same pump....... Keep the tank reasonably full to minimise how much the pump has to suck-up the fuel in hot weather.
You should be able to do 200 miles without any worry about running out.
Petrol has to be trickled in unless you improve the way air comes out of the tank.
A wooden dipstick is a cheap workaround for a poorly gauge.
"Once you break something you will see how it was put together"
I'm more concerned about how well the engine is running for my 600 mile trip, worried the excess ticking means the car is squirting petrol down the drain. (plugs look on the lean side I would say after a run) Seems to happen under acceleration and cornering I thought the HIF was supposed to stop any weird things going on with the float.I recently fixed a hole in the carb and keep checking that for leaks as well as the fuel pipe, I can't feel any moisture when stopped but a little drop of petrol most evaporate pretty quickly
no below the overflow/breather (and connected to the inlet internally) was a soldered up slot, which is intended for dual carb set up and not normally drilled as far as I can see. The solder leaked petrol quite badly when put on it's side. I used some epoxy putty just to cover the solder and I think stop the leak.
I've blown down the overflow and it's still is clear. Infact I was worried the petrol was getting sucked up through the jet uncontrollably so I had the dashpot/piston off the carb with the pump on (engine off) to see if any petrol came up the jet. to check it wasn't blocked I blew down the overflow which created a wonderful fountain of petrol from the jet which landed on the manifold and as I was about to run for cover it just hissed.
I find it a little odd that the overflow is higher than the jet? surely excess petrol is going to go straight in the engine? If the overflow was set just below the jet it would pour out.
Beginning to prefer the simplicity of an HS carb now where you can take the float and needle valve arrangement off in seconds.
OK, well I think the fuel pump is behaving itself in this milder weather, I'll get some MPG figures on my big road trip. Plugs are grey white I should richen the mixture.
I've done alot on the car today (alot for me)
refilled rear dampers (so much better, thanks BMC Ecosse)
Sprayed grease on all suspension joints at the back (bushes really need replacing)
cleaned braked drums, lightly sanded drums and shoes
copper greased moving brake parts
adjusted brakes
replaced diff oil
Replaced gearbox oil
greased gearstick ball joint thing (and in the process panicked because the gear lever pulled off) I thought I'd lost 3rd gear but actually it just slips in too easy now
Set tappets
No unsightly shards of metal in any of the oils, black but not excessively dirty and more to the point nearly the correct amounts in the diff and gearbox which is a surprise as theres nice patches below the two every morning
Anyway so after I set the tappets I started the car and revved from the carb (only a little perhaps 2.5k? it was still cold), when it was on overrun I revved up again and I got a little pop back fire into the carb. I tried to mimick what I did again and there was no back fire. I went on a run and everything seemed fine, It seem the engine is a little noisier on idle now could be in my head.
Whats the backfire? sticking valve (the engine was cold)perhaps not enough oil to the valve gear as it had just been started
idle cold 55lb/sqft
idle warm 25, (just above 20 with the clutch down, laboured idle)
Fast cruise (65-70mph) looks like about 70lb/sqft)
meduim cruise 40-50mph stays dead on 50lb/sqft
30 mph in 4th something like 40lb/sqft
BMC thanks alot for your help I'm all about ready for a big (1200 mile) road trip.
Just adding the final touches, wash and polish (wax in the morning if the weathers good)
Wurther's original are bought don't see what could possibly go wrong ;-)
Got plenty of spares on board? Fuel pump/fan belt/complete spare dizzy and head gasket of course. Alternator and spare radiator hoses and jub clips are pretty much essential.....and of course - a coil!! Where you off to ??
Postponed now until Tuesday, not the cars fault the cars all dressed up with no place to go.
Got a full tin of 20/50 in the boot,(I hope I don't go through the whole lot!) I took out the old dizzy I had in the spares box in the boot, I've got a cap and rotor arm and coil (I thought it was never the coil?), old spark plugs (known to work) They're all just old bits taken off and thrown in the back, I thought a whole dizzy was a bit excessive. Yes I've got a full gasket kit, and fan belt, no fuel pump but it's relatively new and I've found that the problems I've been having are to do with dodgy wiring in the end (erratic ticking). Got random jubilee clips, just replaced the hoses. Random nuts bolts, gaffa tape cable ties epoxy resin. Fuses Poly bushed the front and did the tie bars only on the front but with new rubbers at the back, got rid of a knocking and crazy shakey steering wheel under heavy braking. refilled dampers with SAE30. Changed all fluids (except brake) took off all brake drums cleaned, sanded copper greased moving parts and adjusted. Greased the suspension with moly grease in all positions, no load full load half load. Fitted an oil pressure gauge (already had one never fitted it up, well it leaked so I disabled it) Full socket set, ring spanners and trolley jack, random pliers and screw drivers I've used when repairing, petrol can (full) water for me and the car. EP90 oil. Can't think of anything else but the boot is pretty full.
I think even in Germany you will get EP90 oil if you need it - and 20W50..... But you may not get a Minor dizzy!! A spare KNOWN WORKING complete dizzy is v handy to drop in if there is a problem - if it cures the problem you know where to look - and if not - you know to look elsewhere. Indeed - it is NEVER the coil - provided you have a good spare known working coil with you......... Again -it's for use when there is a problem - you fit the spare coil and the problem remains - and then you are reminded that it's NEVER the coil - so you look elsewhere.....probably at the fuel pump.......
Sorry It's been a long time. Thanks for your help and advice, despite burning oil on idle the little Morris made it almost perfectly through belgium and Germany to it's destination, My friends decided on using it for their wedding car, so it got all dolled up. (Credit to Autoglym wax it did 750 miles and didn't even need a wash for the wedding).[frame][/frame]
