Fuel pump

Post by JSeaman »

A few days ago I got a call to say the Morris Minor had broken down, I popped out and found no fuel. A quick roadside drag of sandpaper across the points got it going again but I ordered a set of new points (the double ones) to fix it properly.

Today I have fitted the points but if I put voltage to the pump it lifts the diaphragm once and then just sticks there with the points open.

I've tried various different diaphragm positions and point gaps but they all behave the same, what am I missing?!

:) Thanks Bob - the new one needed to be quite a bit further out than the old which threw me

I've got to move on to figuring out trunnions and steering rack next (I still can't figure out where the oil/grease in the steering rack goes!)

If it's oil - it runs away into the rubber boots.......which is why I use Moly Grease.. which is pumped in via the grease nipple under a wee plug on the passenger side floor - it's directly opposite the point where the steering column connects on the driver side.

Thanks a lot, when it gets in the rubber boots does it just drop out on the floor or something?

I saw a few discussions about grease vs oil - I figure while I'm using grease on the trunnions/tie rod I might as well stick with it on the rack. Is it is a case of pump it in until it comes out a seal somewhere on the rack too?

No! Just 10 strokes of the gun - moving the rack along as you do so - start with it on full right lock.......

Surely that would depend on the size of the gun?!

I rather assumed a standard cartridge grease gun........ It's not exactly critical. Put in 20 if you want!

Roy is correct ( it's very, very rare that he is not !! ) 10 would be fine.

Yes there has to be grease in the boots and around the joint but there also has to be " space " for it to move around, when the steering goes from full left hand lock to full right hand lock.
Give it 50 pumps with the grease gun, the rubber boots will bulge and it will go....here's your clue...four letter word...in Roy's
reply... starts with a " B " and ends in a " G ".
