Core plugs fitting.

Hi all, Im changing my core plugs. These are the dish penny type not the flat type with a lip. I thought you put them in dish out and hit the high spot to expand them. While looking at stuff on youtube I came across this

i have always fitted mine dome out i.e.the way you want to fit them not the way this guy has fitted his

This was the only film I found of that type of core plug. This would give you real problems if you put them in that way

The correct way to fit a core plug (penny washer type) in an 'A' series block is to fit the concave (hollow) side towards the block and give the core plug a sharp tap in the centre. This expands the core plug at its rim and seals the joint. You can use a sealing compound if you want but if the block where the core plug fits is clean and rust free and a new core plug is used no sealant should be required. The reason for fitting the core plug this way round is that if ice forms in the block it expands and is able to push the core plug out. If fitted the other way round the expansion of the ice increases the pressure on the centre of the core plug and ultimately to the rim which makes it difficult for the ice to push out the core plug. The greater the pressure created by the ice the tighter the core plug grips which may lead to a cracked block.

Indeed! I can't see how they could be successfully fitted the other way round anyway?

Untill you hit them they are not tight in the block. As far as I can see putting them in the wrong way round its just that goo holding them in. Hiting them with the socket will do nothing because of the lip. Just thought it a good idea to put it on here as a lot of people look to youtube to find out how to do things. Not much use when the info is wrong
