Bushes and stuff
Hi all you wonderful people.
I've got an annoying shudder when I brake. I think it's from the front. I've got disc and pads at the front. I assume someone converted it prior to my owning. I took the wheels off today and had a look and the discs look pretty new and the pads have loads of wear to go.
From reading stuff on here I've seen that a common cause of brake shudder (judder) is worn bushes. I had a prod around the front bushes and some look in a bit of a state. I'm thinking of buying a set of replacements for front and rear and trying to work my way around and change them. Is this wise? I'm wondering what to expect and if anyone's got any tiips for doing this?
Is it likely that it's all going to be very rusty nuts and bolts that'll snap when I try to loosen them? Just trying to gauge if this is one of these jobs that'll be more hassle than it's worth although the brake judder's pretty bad.
Cheers all, Paul.

Re: Bushes and stuff
Not difficult, but it quickly ceases to be fun.
Get a set of poly bushings and a spray can of liquid wrench to loosen things. Look carefully at the front eyebolts. If the bushings are bad, you may have some excess wear there.
When you get to the rear springs, don't forget the pads where the springs join the axle.

And you will need correct size spanners....Whitworth/BSF... Soak all the threads with Plus Gas (NOT WD 40) for a few days before you start - and 'ease' them all loose and retighten before starting the job......

Re: Bushes and stuff
Thanks for this. I took it for a spin today and it's actually a mega shudder through the steering when braking. I noticed that there's a really long post about it on here. I'll have a thorough read through it later when I get a chance. Might have to leave it for now anyway. Bit skint to have to fork out for loads of things to try out. Thanks for advice though.

Re: Bushes and stuff
I had the same sort of thing many years ago and it turned out to be the tie bar bushes at the very front. I guess its a case of prising with a large screwdriver or similar to see if there's any noticeable slack anywhere where there shouldn't be.
Good luck, Colin.

Re: Bushes and stuff
Thanks Colin. I'll have a prod about and see what I can find.
Re spanners ... Are "Whitworth/BSF" just imperial spanners? I've got some imperial ones in my toolbox. Sizes in fractions of an inch I think.
Pardon my ignorance. Still learning

NO! That's the point - you need some Whit/BSF spanners (ring and open end) and a few sockets are handy too - although some 'metric' ones are very close....... Plenty on ebay - or search at Biggar Show !

Sounds OK,7/16, 9/16, 1/2 and 5/8 AF will be most useful.Sizes in fractions of an inch
1/4 Whitworth ring spanner is the top tool for getting wings off. Boot fairs can be a very good source for cheap good quality spanners and sockets, don't get any that aren't chrome vanadium.

Re: Bushes and stuff
A/F spanners are NO USE for the suspension! The body/chassis needs BSF/Whitworth spanners - Only the 'Austin' parts (so engine/gearbox/rear axle) uses A/F spanners.

Fair enough, AF for the engine, I'm sure there is one installed!

Re: Bushes and stuff
A few of the suspension components are now supplied with UNF threads/nuts
for example:-
Trunion pins (part of service kit SUS140) (spanner 9/16 UNF).
Eye bolt pin Pt No: SUS103 (spanner 9/16 UNF).
Upper pivot pin Pt No: SUS 143 (spanner 3/4 UNF).
Rear spring shackle pin Pt No: SUS719 (spanner 9/16 UNF).
Rear axle 'U' bolts Pt Nos: SUS707 & SUS708 (spanner 9/16 UNF).
To make doubly sure I have just been and checked my spares stock and I have a mixture of both UNF and Whitworth threads/nuts on the above parts.
Whitworth is OK if you have an unadulterated Minor but over time many parts may have been changed so you may end up with a Minor having both Whitworth and UNF threaded parts.
So if you see the above spanners at a car boot sale or auto-jumble and the price is right I would get them because you may need them.

Re: Bushes and stuff
Managed to get some spanners on Ebay. Hopefully these'll do ...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370848059369? ... 294wt_1171
Got Plusgas too and will soak everything for a couple of days before I attempt. Also ordered the front bush set in Polyurethane so hopefully get that started this week.
Should I refil the dampers too and what do I need to know in order to do it? The car seems to be slightly lower at one side. Would dampers sort this or is that more likely spring related?
Cheers

Re: Bushes and stuff
Plusgas left to soak is a very good plan.
Those spanner are dropped forged and open ended neither of which is ideal, Chrome Vanadium ring spanners will take plenty of punishment, won't go rusty and are a pleasure to use.
This lot would have been much better value!

Re: Bushes and stuff
These spanners will be a good help to you - do you have any metric ring keys - or sockets? Some are very close to BSF/Whit sizes. Yes you should drain and refill the dampers with sae 40 oil (NOT 10W40) - but height is down to springs - not dampers. Ideal chance to raise the low side when doing the poly bushes. Usually the driver side sits low?? Raise it one spline - it may then sit slightly high unladen - but should be flat when driver on board!

Re: Bushes and stuff
Hi Roy,
I've got full set of metric sockets. Some metric spanners and some imperial ones. Its the passenger side that sits slightly lower. maybe ok when I'm inside then. I'll just leave that.
Is draining and filling the dampers a tricky job? Don't know anything about it. Is that damper oil an Autoparts job

Rather a long way away from you I'm afraid. They look better
Yours will be fine for the dampers and other not rusted up stuff.

Re: Bushes and stuff
Paul - oil in Autoprats is for Lottery Winners only.....the prices are beyond belief...... You could try the Lawnmower place near Peacock Cross or the motorbike place (but don't get mugged in to expensive 'fork oil)' - you just want straight engine oil SAE 40. Or get this from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SIP-02350-Tra ... 485729632f or just go for SAE 30 oil which you will get in Tesco garden section - or even Homebase..... and it will be almost as good.
