Barn Found Traveller.New Timberwork + Other Repairs.

Post by Morris Mike »

This Morris Minor Traveller had been sitting in the owners barn for 20 years,he found it in another barn nearby and it had sat there for perhaps 10 years.
He did exercise the car on a regular basis up and down a private road, although the brakes were non working.

The bodywork was overall in good order, requiring only small amounts of welding repairs prior to an Mot.
The whole braking system was renewed.
New tyres fitted.
The whole car checked over prior to the Mot,which she passed with no advisories.

Some friends visiting one day decided they wanted to purchase her from me and use her as she was.

They just wanted an everyday car to take the dogs out and perhaps run some errands etc.

But after only a week of owning her they got the Morris Minor Traveller bug, joined the club and wanted to turn her into the pristine car she once was.

Knowing I had restored countless Morris cars +many other models over the years they asked me to work my magic on their newly purchased vehicle.

We decided to replace the timber work as a whole unit instead of patch repairing the car.
Along with the timber work replacement other associated work was to be carried out at the same time.

Once the timber work was removed various metalwork areas that had corroded and were hidden by the timber work was removed and fresh metal fabricated and welded into position.
All the inner wheel arch areas were stripped back to bare metal and treated with hard wearing chassis paint.
All other metal work was cleaned back and painted.
The new timber work was then fitted.

This was day number four.

More photo`s to follow.

Just for the record I have been working 12 hour day`s and get stuck into my work, very few tea breaks or standing around talking to visitors who pop by to see me. :D

Looking good so far, well done. I've found that the original metal hings work better than cable ties

Looks wonderful. Did you stain the wood?

I like to give the bare ash timber a coat of Liberon light oak wood dye just to give that aged look.

Then I will be following this with at least four coats of Danish oil at our friends request.
Some people like to use a breathable non polyurethane varnish.

I have seen restoration projects where the timber has been given a clear coat over the natural ash,but in my opinion it looks too light.

One of the jobs today was fitting the aluminium guttering around the roof.
As you may know the section of channel comes in a straight length, you have to fit the channel forming the bends as required then dress down the top of the profile to hide your fixings.
I have made these timber dressing down tools out of Walnut.

Rear lights and surrounds cleaned ready for fitment.

Today the car was finished....well this stage anyway.

Our happy friends came to collect it.They were amazed at the work carried out in such a short time.

After just 11 days work the car looks totally different .

It has not just been a re-timbering of the rear end of the Traveller, and I am sure the firms carrying out this type of work would not have cleaned and stripped and renewed so many items like I have on this project.
It has been more of a restoration of the car from the front doors back.

All of the interior floors, exterior underside and wheel arches etc have been stripped back to bare metal and paint finished.
New headlining.
New passenger and drivers seat recovered (when i get the final cover).
All interior timber stripped back to bare timber and re-finished.
All fittings stripped cleaned and re-finished.
New rear load are carpet.
New back panel.
Lights re-finished like new.
Wheels stripped and re-painted.
Rear metalwork stripped to bare metal and re-finished.
Front floor stripped and painted.
Seat belts fitted.
Alternator fitted.
4 coats of danish oil applied to new timberwork.
Detailing to small fittings etc

Now I can get back to working on my own Traveller, details to follow.

M M

Next job on the cards is to remove the engine and gearbox, detail the engine bay plus respray the front half of the car including doors and bonnet off and windscreen out etc. i think they want this carried out in about a months time.
