series 2 steering rack

I am considering trying to obtain a series 2 steering rack the type with the smaller diameter track rod ends, my question is the only parts I have seen advertised is the small pinion drive shaft so I wonder what if any other parts are /would be available to carry out the overhaul ,I must add that I would need to find a steering rack first .The replacement racks advertised near to me by a well known dealer are on an exchange basis but what do you get for the money do they simply swap parts about to get the best used parts that they can fit or have they gota new part source

any advice would be appreciated

Can't say for sure but would think they just re-shim the tie rods, new seal in the column shaft, new gaiters and maybe new brass dampers if your lucky, and a lick of paint over the lot. Probably no track rod ends.

Why do you want the small TRends?? They were beefed up for a good reason! And yes - I suspect 'reconditioned' is used loosely (no pun intended) on the secondhand racks......

The only reason I thought about the small track rod ends was because the ones on my car are new and only done 300 ish miles but then again if I do not change or have to change the recon rack for several years I will have to buy new track rod ends so the bigger thread type rod ends will be fine

You would do better to 'recon' your own rack - yourself!

That is a very good suggestion ,but what I am trying to do is have a spare rack ready for fitment when required , so I suppose the next logical step is for me to go to the wanted section and see what if any racks would be available

Racks don't fail without fair warning.....while I do carry a spare rack - in over 10 years so far I have had no hint of a need of it.....

Thats it then I will keep my money and not bother with a spare rack refurb

I agree with Roy, just make sure the rack is lubricated regularly and try to stay away from the potholes!!!

You forgot to mention this when we were talking about MPG and the amount of cast iron you carry around!

Even if the rack itself isn't I'm pretty sure the case is.
Are you going to suggest that it isn't pretty heavy to be carrying around "just in case"?

You are winding me up.......I 'carry' it as a spare IN MY GARAGE along with a rear axle/two gearboxes/two engines and various cylinder heads.... I don't carry it about with me in my Trav......

I would avoid 'rebuilt' racks, as from my experience they are not much better than the worn one they replace. In some cases the rebuilding is merely a fresh lick of paint!! I am aware of a member of another car club who made his own phosphor-bronze bushes which were a great improvement over the original nylon bush in the steering rack, for that particular car.
