Advice for a 16 yr old waiting to buy a morris minor!!

Post by tmsdvbwn »

Hi guys my names Tom and I live in Devon :) , I recently fell inlove with the Minors and have decided for now that this will be my first car when I turn 17 next year in May (dad loves the idea) - mainly because I hear it's generally cheap to run and insurance is very cheap through FJ if I join the MMOC club, read through the forums to find some 17 year olds paying as little as £500 for insurance which is amazing! Never actually seen a Minor but hope to see one at the classic car show in Paignton later this month.

Wanted to get some advice from anyone on here, my biggest concern is obviously getting the right car, i've heard a few horror stories and want to make sure I get a good quality one and maybe would be better to get one from a dealer like Charles Wares Centre as I saw a topic which explained what to look for when buying a Minor which was quite overwhelming for someone as unexperienced as me :o !! Will have to look into insurance and what the cheapest method is.

Reply with anything you like!!

Look at several before you actually buy one, shiny paint doesn't mean good car!
Find where the local branch meets, go along and see some cars while getting some pointers about what to look for.

Welcome to the messageboard :D

There's some useful advice about buying a Minor in this thread: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=37815

The most important thing is that if you are unfamiliar with Minors take someone with you who knows what to look for. And bear in mind that dealer prices are generally at least a third more than buying privately.

Might also be worth joining the Young Members Register which has an active Facebook group. Details of how to do this are here: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=35620

Thanks everyone for a reply, think what we'll do is buy one with a good history but needs a bit of work, and spend some time fixing it up as I still have a while until I can actually drive!!

Hi my name is Tom also!
The right car will come along eventually, don't jump in and buy the first one you see. I was looking for quite a while and found one down in oxford. The boke sent emails and pictures and I was almost ready to head down (3 hours) with the cash. Before I committed I asked one of the young members who was local to the car to go and check it over for me, it turns out the car was only really suitable for 'Spares or repair'. I found the right one a few months later, its in good nick at was a great price and it still works ! haha

But join the MMOC Young members on facebook, there is loads of us. https://www.facebook.com/groups/MMOCYM/
