Another part to ID

Post by David W. »

Here's a plunger that I can't identify. It's in my collection of gearbox innards, but of course that doesn't mean it's a gearbox innard.[frame]Image[/frame]

No sign of rust so probably a gearbox part anyway.
Interesting tape measure you have there, mine are all inches one side and Metric the other.

I could be wrong but it looks to me like a gear selector rod indent plunger which when fitted has a coil spring pressing on the non round end and if it is Minor fits under and is kept in place by the removable side cover on the Minor gearbox.
See Minor wksp Man illustration FF part numbers 112/113/119/126 and which indent into part numbers 111/118/125.

It is very similar to the detent pieces. I've put three or four gearboxes back together, and still have no recollection of this part.
The box I've just completed is from a Sprite (I think) and there are a few other subtle differences. I got t he box back together, and had all the pieces I needed, so this will go back into the collection.
Thanks

Looks like a red herring to me, also an interesting surface the bullet type chap is sitting on, what might that be?

That interesting surface is a retired and soiled bath towel.

And I'll let the world in on a little US secret. Inches are still official, but most stuff now is metric.

Very pleased that its a retired bath towel as was just about to call in the CSI boys, I have been fetling with minors for thirty years and that is not something I recognise, however I could be wrong.

Not so, my friend.
Item 45 is a small plunger. There are three of them, and they lock the thrust washers in place.

The unknown is the same diameter as the interlock plungers, and I assume the base is machined to take a longer spring.
Here is a picture of item 45 at top with its spring. Next is the mystery plunger, and a normal plunger.[frame]Image[/frame]
