Speedo trim question ...

Post by JustinMinor1000 »

Very boring question ..

My car (see other thread) appears to have a modified Mini speedo (Or and this has only just occured to me an Austin 1100? Which might reveal why it's apparently telling the right time.) I'm going to replace it regardless and I've got a bid on one on Ebay as we speak. Mine has a trim ring arround it which looks like it has been butchered at some time. Is this part of the speedo or a seperate part ?

We are talking about a 1969 minor 1000 here ..

Also does anyone know when the speedo was changed over from miles only to Miles/KM ?

I think it was sometime in 1966, the trim ring is a seperate part and can be fiddley to get back in place as its a sprung shape so this can explain your damaged one, dont know if someone has an easy way of putting it back (maybe using plastic ties or something)

i find the ring i split at the bottom. it wraps around the chrome ring which holds the glass in.
this outer ring is kind of lose around the clock, and acts like a sealing washer when you push the
clock back in to the dash, holding the clock firmly alowing you to put back the screws each side.

if you dont win on ebay, i have loads of clocks and the outer rings. there were only used on later cars as kevin mentions, only the ones with the ali facier on the dash. not sure what they used on the 1956/60s
minors, going to check now. :o

That's very kind of you. I did win the speedo and my wife (virulaent spitting anti-Metric lady she is) is over the moon that it's not despoiled with any KPH lettering ..

When it arrives I'll se if it goes together but if it doesn't I'll not forget your offer

(£5.95 including post and packing btw which I think was a result)

But, but, but I *like* my KPH lettering, it means when I go to these funny foriegn places where they don't know how to measure distance properly I can still easily abide by their laws ;-)

Although my favourite for that has to be Ireland. Distances in KM, Speeds in MPH. Go ROI! :-)

I much prefer KPH and distances in KM.
Over in Germaland you can be driving somewhere and the sign says something like Frankfurt 160 - yet you can get there in less than an hour.... Such joy :-D
