Not wanting to watch The White Queen I went into the garage to remove the rear nearside wheel cylinder (both rears will be replaced). This was difficult to remove so I thought I should look at the hub. I removed the countersunk screw and the half shaft slid out - maybe a little too easily. Eventually I managed to remove the wheel cylinder but now I can't get the half shaft back "home". It is sitting proud of the hub by about 2 cms. Please - what have I done and how do I fix?

You need to 'lift' the inner end slightly so it can engage in the diff output gear...don't panic - just feel for it.....

Ok thanks will have another go tomorrow - I certainly wont be forcing anything either

You may also need to rotate it slightly....so that the splines engage.

Having taken the shaft out (not necessary to change a cylinder, but I can understand the temptation) make sure that you use a new paper gasket when you reassemble in order to avoid oil leaks. Clean both mating surfaces before fitting the gasket. Depending on the year of the car, also check the condition of the large O-ring (but if it looks OK, then do NOT remove it to check further, as it won;t go back properly and you will need a new one of those as well!).
