Post by ben-me-123 »

quick question, will a 1275 midget gearbox fit a minor straight off, and will it mess around the speedo?

Yes it fits - but need to fit the Minor release arm etc. And speedo will be fine.

When you have them side by side - it will be obvious. The Spridget clutch is hydraulic - and the Minor is mechanical - so just swap the operation levers..

What engine are you fitting it to? 1098 or 948?

1098 & I'm just eyeing up the options- I lost third going up a hill, then second shortly after- it does still have 1st and 4th but that's a totally useless combination...

Also BMC I'm glad you confirmed that one- I said to a guy the other day that the minor clutch is mechanical and he gave me a strange look and said that they're all hydraulic...

Austin A40 will be hydraulic - but all Minors are mechanical. It's very simple and reliable.

I don't like hydraulic ones- I know how they work, but they always seem ... mischievous ... ;)

The 1275 box should also have a reversing light switch

The 1098 clutch is bigger than the 1275, so make sure that you use the 1098 carbon thrust, which should be thinner than 1275 one already in the box. The 1275 ratios are closer than a Minor, so 1st will be higher than you have been used to, but shouldn't be any problem unless you live in a very hilly area and plenty of hill starts?

I've heard rumours about an 1100 box nearer and cheaper, which I'll have if it's genuine, but this helps with future reference, so thanks guysss

I thought that it was just the later 1275 boxes had the reverse switches.

Sorry about the last post, almost in Wenglish. I have been searching for the 1275 box for several years and you cannot depend upon one having a reversing switch although it is a very good sign. Pretty sure that the early boxes were not fitted with the switch, input shaft is the one to check, 22G171 = Morris 1098, 22G229 = Midget/sprite (I think).
