So my tourer passed its mot today but not all is well as the look on my mechanic's face when he brought it back to me ."It only just passed it needs a fair bit of work doing to her I had to grease both the trunnions to get her through it shouldn't have passed really".So my query/question, how bad would they have had to be to be passed after just greaseing and do I have to replace the whole unit or is there a "kit" available to "refurbish" them [my mechanic's words not mine] or is this typical over reaction with most mechanics and if I do need the full unit then do they vary throughout the year of manufacture as mine is a 1969 tourer.
Any advice would be most appreciated.

'Greasing' does nothing to take up wear - he was kidding himself on. But fair do -he has told you and you are keen to sort it - so all's well! Yes - you can buy new top and bottom trunnions and fit them to the old king pins - this will take up half the wear and is usually good for another 10,000 miles or so - which depending on use - could be 1 year - or 10!! The REAL fix is complete new kingpins and trunnions - more expensive - but good for maybe 100,000 miles if you look after them by greasing them every 1000 miles - using moly grease. Thanks bmc I guessed so but needed that assurance I think I've found them on ESM seeing as you quoted a price of £90 so what I was looking at must be what I need as they were £89 .Just want to make sure that I buy the right bits as they sell the kit @ £14 but I'm guessing that you'd recommend the whole lot per side which is the long bits as opposed to the shorter bits [sorry if that sounds bizarre but its a long time since I did my own mechanics and never changed one of these units before]. Guess I need a pic to show me if someone can do that on here so I know that what I'm looking at is exactly what I need .
If your car is a 'keeper' and you do a decent mileage in it - then definitely fit the complete new kingpins - and then you don't need to worry about them again. Compare prices - including postage - before ordering! I strongly recommend Moly grease - and often.
ok I'm convinced I've waited 25 years for this car after having a two door and then a four door and I've had her about 5 years now and she's in excellent condition having being restored back in 2003 and still looking good apart from some slight bubbling on the usual bottom of the drivers door with a perfect rust free underside and detailed engine bay and no welding at all so she's definitely a keeper so I don't mind paying out on her after all a moggies for life not just for profit
Thanks for the advice I was starting to hover around a kit only solution even though bmc advised to the contrary [£35 as opposed to £200+] but although I was convinced by bmc I'm even more so now[not that I didn't trust your vast knowledge bmc ] I was just sitting down and digesting all the avenues but as has been said it would be a false economy so two new full trunions it is then once again many thanks for the advice.
