Can't tell it's state from its number. Does it move freely when you try to turn it over? I would get some oil into the bores and replace the spark plugs - leaving it open to the elements like that invites the ingress of rain water = rust = dead engine.

If it's been standing outdoors like that - with no plugs and the ports all lying open - it will be knackered now...... Engines need to be stored dry - with oil in the bores - plugs in the head, and ports plugged off with oil soaked rags. But you can only try.......

Being as i've been into classic cars for 37 yrs now,I know how to check it over, that leaving it outside will not be good for it,how they should be stored, that you cant tell its state from its number!
If you read the post again thats not what I asked!!!
So please only reply if you know anything about THIS engine!
As I said,its a bit of a long shot!
When I see it next weekend,I can do my checks and then decide Y or N!!

I have no objection to you or anyone for that matter answering my questions! :)
But it would help if people stuck to reading and answering the questions properly!!
Nobody knows it all,but I am well on the way to getting the tee shirts for a few marques that I know more about, and I am working on regaining/getting my MM teeshirt after a few years away from them!

It should be possible to deduce something about the engine from it's number, even I can say that it isn't reconditioned by the factory, not a gold seal engine as the numbers got changed.

Even if it had been, lord only knows what treatment and how many miles it has done since.
You have the engine, tell us what shape it's in.

If I saw a row of engines from either Rover V8's or TR6's,and mine was amongst them.
I can assure you I would know which was mine!
Even if I saw the engine from my old 1971 4.2l Jag XJ6 that I stripped and rebuilt in the mid 80's,in another Jag at a show,I would know it,as it had some unique unremovable features!
Each cars engine has its own personality,be that how it runs or what it looks like!
Now wouldnt life be boring if they were all the same! :(
Whoever,"if they are still using the MM forums", owned the car this engine used to live in,as its blue block is unusual, may recognise it! :)
I depends on how personal they got with their car!
It maybe they just didnt have a clue where the oil/water etc went!
As I said its a long shot!

You might recognise an engine you once had but did you memorise the number?
I can't even remember the registration numbers of the cars I've owned.

Well after looking at the engine and doing a few checks,I decided that for £50 it was worth a punt.
Will fire it up on the bench some time this week, and see what happens!
