oil warning light?

every time I start my 1967 saloon the oil warning light comes on(the orange light above the ign light?), but then will go out if I accelerate. If I leave it to tick over the engine cuts out unless I use the choke or the accelerator,this is even after a few hours driving.Ive checked the engine oil level which is fine..is there any thing i can do to fix the problem?

2 different issues here.

The oil warning light should come on when you turn the ignition on and go out as soon as you start the engine. It should not come on at any normal engine speed from tickover to high revs. What does yours do?

If the engine will not tick over without stalling, the first thing I would look at is the carburettor mixture. Do you have a manual that will help you do this?

the light stays on while on tick over and the it stalls, if I rev it the light goes off.i haven't got a clue how to check the mixture.

Turn up the engine tick over speed before fiddling with the mixture

Not the most experienced but has it always done this? or has something changed? How slowly is it idling does your ignition light come on too? You could have your idle set too low? which is a little screw on a HS carb (marked as no2 on this hard to decipher diagram)



Mixture screw is marked 1 from above anti clockwise weakens the mixture, clockwise richens it if I remember rightly.

But if it hasn't been altered I don't see why it would need changing?

First steps are to make sure the air cleaner is clean - and breather pipes also clear. And is the carb piston free to rise and fall easily - and is there some oil in the carb damper? Then as above - tweak up the idle speed so it at least idles away when warm with 'choke' off.

the ignition light stays off and so does the orange light after I start..i'll give it a bit of choke and slowly take it off when the engines nice and warm...but then the engine slows down and cuts out.its been happening about 4 days and last weekend cut out on me twice while driving,i left it about 10 mins and the engine started again.the only way I seem to be able to stop it from stalling is to either give some revs or choke,this is even after an hour or so driving when the engines hot.bit embarrassing braking down at traffic lights in a old car.

ive adjusted the choke/idle screw which seems to have temporary solved the problem until I get it into a garage.

Oil change etc won't make a difference - but is of course worth doing if it's due ! The idea is to use the non 'choke' screw for normal idling adjustments.

I had a problem with the choke stuck on sometimes give the jet a little (gentle push) when it happens see if it pops up (no.7 on the previous diagram)

sorry,it was the throttle screw i adjusted and the lights gone off and engine no longer cuts out.

The choke control also increases the tickover speed
