Broken Half Shaft

Post by DAVIDMCCULLOUGH »

So, let the saga begin!

We got the boat to head for the National on Thursday from Belfast to Birkenhead and stayed in Liverpool on Thursday night. We set off on Friday morning heading to Charlbury. There were 3 vehicles in convoy, Berts van had been running badly but seemed to recover itself. We pulled in for fuel at Hopwood services on the M42. As I went to pull away from the pumps in my traveller there was a little 'click' just like it had jumped out of gear. So I checked the clutch mechanism first, nothing out of place, thought I would try 3rd gear and it started to read 40mph on the speedo while going nowhere. So I knew it was the halfshaft.

We sent the other 2 cars on, phoned the AA which I have been a member of for years and waited on them coming. I told the call taker there was no point sending me someone to see if they could get me back on the road and they took me at my word and sent a proper recovery truck. Anyway about 5 o'clock we arrived at Cornbury, at least it improved my fuel economy.........

After putting tents up and eating we got stuck in and found it as the drivers side was gone. We begged and borrowed trolley jacks and bits of wood, spare wheels and some tools and got it jacked up. With a bit of an audience of other campers, we tried to push the bit out from the other side but there was absolutely no way it would budge.

So next morning about 8.30 I set off to the autojumble and got a picked a good pair of halfshafts from a selection on minor developments stall, got gaskets from a couple of sources, axle stands from the car booters and even a new container of EP90 from another car booter! Oh and a great big heavy hammer, all these bits came to just over £30 :D The most difficult bit to find was someone with a square key to open the axle drain, from now on I will carry one in my tool kit!

The car was jacked up on spare wheels to make it safe, this took the longest as the feild was sloping and uneven. Oil drained, drive shaft off, diff out and without too much bother. The bit was well and truley jammed in and I took a lot of hitting with the heavy hammer to shift it.[frame]Image[/frame]
I was very chuffed as you can see to get it moved! Anyway, we fitted both second hand half shafts with the new gaskets and oil, refitted the brakes shoes and was driving down to the rally field by 3pm!

There is a slight vibration about 45mph so I didnt go over this speed on the way back home, we stuck to mainly A roads. i have another diff from a 30k mile car I broke so will have a look and hope to fit and test this before heading back to England i n just over a fortnight for MOT UK.

I would have thought many others would have gathered round and tipped the car on it's side for you so easier to work on......... :D At least you now have a spare shaft to take with you..... Try turning the prop shaft 180 degrees to see if it solves the vibration.

David, sorry to have missed you. I may not have been carrying a spare Coil (edited) to solve my own Saturday problem, but I did have my tool-kit with "dog-bone" key (has all the sizes and shapes required for undoing drain plugs on Moggies and other old cars) - could have helped in that department.
Best Regards, George.

It was tricky getting the broken bit out of the diff, but it went back together quickly enough. A fine example of in the field repair and how many friends we have with other owners, to lend us the jacks etc. cheers :D

Nice job!
There seems to be a lot of twist on the broken bit, how does the other one look?

As Stevey says we made a few new friends from this after borrowing bits and Bobs.

Mike no swarfega, I did start off with gloves but they quickly broke up, Im still removing stinking EP90 from my fingers!

Marky the passenger side half shaft looked fine, just the normal wear ridge in it. Im not a raker at traffic lights or anything either! The gearbox in this car was wrecked when I got it so maybe the previous owners were doing quick take offs ats the lights and lifting the back wheel a bit....

George - was thinking I would have saw you but I must have missed you while I was repairing this.

And Roy yes I will try the 180 turn, I didnt mark it before it was removed.

This afternoon I started stripping my low mileage axle and I had to weld a repair into one of the mounting bits on the axle. Half shafts look fine and so does the diff, it will need new wheel bearings fitting though. Case is now in primer and will get a coat of black tomorrow.

Make sure the axle didn't take a bend set when you welded it.....

I turned the drive shaft 180 degrees this morning and it has cured the vibration and I even noticed that there were already 2 centre punch marks on the flanges to mark them, I only got up to 50 for about 2 miles so Im planing a quick blast into Belfast in the morning to test again.

Axle case is now painted and Ive ordered new bearings and seals from ESM which will probably arrive tomorrow, but Im now thinking of putting off changing it for a while as the diff seems nice and quiet and its oil tight after about 200 miles. Im heading off on MOT UK in a fortnights time, decisions decisions!

David,
Check the tolerance on that wheel bearing. I was sent a 6207 C3 bearing (not from ESM) which is not suitable.

Thanks Declan, will check that. I decided to leave as is at the moment, Ive done about another 100 miles since and its quiet and vibration free. The other casing is painted up and ready to fit so will maybe do it once Im back from MOT UK.
