disc brake conversion
can anyone tell me where the best place to site the servo on a disc brake conversion. my garage seems unsure where. thanks

Anywhere you like - it's one of the major snags of fitting disc brakes....... Are you planning on racing/rallying the car?? Many fit in the engine bay - one side or the other - where it's a bluddy nuisance when doing any work on the engine....... It must be mounted nose high. Does the 'garage' know about removing the seal from the master cylinder? Are they fitting the servo to work all the brakes - or just the front discs ??

hi bmcecosse. thanks for your reply. the car will not be used for rallying just everyday use. I presume it will just be disc brakes it will be operated. I'm not that mechanically minded but will pass this on to the wee garage that I am using. thank you for your time.

From experience, mount it inside the engine bay on the right hand flitch panel (the bit just in front of the inner wing. As Roy says, it needs to be angled upwards - the instructions should come with the kit. Do not mount it on the floor of the engine bay - it will stop the removal of the start motor unless you first remove the distributor
Avoid the left hand side of the bay as this has the exhaust pipe and will get very warm.
Make sure that the manifold is removed for drilling and tapping - you don't want swarf in the engine. I recommend driving both front and rear brakes from the servo. Also as per Roy, make sure that the "top hat" seal is removed from the master cylinder. It is essential to fit a remote fluid reservoir as the discs can displace a greater volume of fluid than the drums.

I think it's a MUST to plumb the servo to ALL the brakes... Means quite a bit of extra brake piping (and do they understand BSF brake pipe fittings??) - I hope the 'garage' are up to all this !!

you don't need to fit a servo if fitting disc brakes i have had lots of cars fitted with disc kits and only the black truck has a servo .

Thanks to all who gave me advice. Spoken to garage and they now understand where to site servo and all the other bits and pieces. Garage have done a good job so far according to my old garage. Sounds promising and hope I'll be back on the road with a big smile next week.

Let's hope so - it's not a completely straightforward job.... I hate to think what it's all costing !! Expensive enough when DIY - but to pay a garage.......
