New gear box condition?

Post by Tom and Maria »

I have a spare gearbox which I was given a while ago. Upon removing he inspection plates all the teeth look excellent, almost new even. What worries me is that he input shaft (is that what it's called?) which goes through the clutch has some play in it. Maybe a mil or so at the end of the shaft.

Is this normal?

Yes indeed - it is supported by the bush in the crank tail. It's the little 'dog teeth' on each gear that you need to look at......and the teeth on 1st gear and the laygear matching teeth. They are not so easy to see - but a good bright light and select second gear helps. For the dog teeth - look first at 4th gear - they 'never' wear and then compare with 3rd gear and 2nd gear - which always has the worst wear.......

Great thanks, that is reassuring.

The teeth and second and third look the same as on fourth, so all should be well.

Thanks,

Tom
